▪️Sharavati River (part 1/2)

▪️This is an important river in the state of Karnataka flowing towards the west.

▪️The Sharavati River originates from the Shimoga district of Karnataka.

▪️ Sharavati flows entirely in Karnataka.

▪️The Jog Falls is created by the Sharavati River, located about 24 km from Sagara, are formed by this river.

▪️The river Sharavati originates at a place called Ambutheertha in the Thirthahalli taluk.

▪️Jog Fall

▪️Jog Falls is the second-highest plunge waterfall in India Located near Sagara, Karnataka, these segmented falls are a major tourist attraction.

▪️They are also called Gersoppa Falls, Gersoppa Falls and Jogada Gundi.

▪️Jog Falls is created by the Sharavathi River falling from a height of 253 m (830 ft.), making it the second highest pluge waterfall in India.

▪️Tapi (Tapti) River

▪️ The Tapti (also known as the Tapi) is the second largest west flowing river of the Peninsular India and is known as ‘the twin’ or ‘the handmaid’ of the Narmada.

▪️ It originates near Multai in Madhya pradesh

▪️ River Tapi flows through three states Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat

▪️It is a Westward flowing river which drains into Arabian sea near Gulf of Khambhat.

▪️Tributaries

▪️Right Bank:  Suki, Gomai, Arunavati and  Aner.

▪️Left Bank:  Vaghur, Amravati,  Buray, Panjhra,  Bori,  Girna,  Purna,  Mona 

▪️Dam- Kakrapar Dam, Ukai Dam, Girna Dam

▪️Ghaghra River (part 1/2)

▪️ Its source is near Gurla Mandhata peak, south of Manasarovar in Tibet
(river of the trans-Himalayan origin). 

▪️It is known as the Karnaili in 
Western Nepal.

▪️ After collecting the waters of its 
tributaries – Tila, Seti and Beri, it 
comes out of the mountain, cutting a deep gorge at Shishapani. 

▪️The total length of Ghaghara River up to its confluence with the Ganges at Revelganj in Bihar is 1,080 km.

▪️ Damodar river rises in the hills of the Chotanagpur plateau and flows
through a rift valley.

▪️Damodar River is a river flowing across the Indian states of Jharkhand and West Bengal.

▪️Damodar River is known as Damuda.

▪️The word damu stands for holy and da signifies water.

▪️ Rich in mineral resources, the valley is home to large-scale mining and
industrial activity.

▪️ It has a number of tributaries and subtributaries, such as Barakar,
Konar, Bokaro, Haharo, etc.

▪️The Barakar is the most important tributary of the Damodar.

▪️Damodar river (part 2/2)

▪️Several dams have been constructed in the valley, for the generation of
hydroelectric power.

▪️ The valley is called “the Ruhr of India”.

▪️The first dam was built across the Barakar River, a tributary of the
Damodar river.

▪️ It used to cause devastating floods as a result of which it earned the name "Sorrow of Bengal".

▪️ Now the river is tamed by constructing numerous dams.

▪️ It joins the Hugli River 48 km below Kolkata

PENNAR RIVER

▪️ Also know as Uttara pinakini.

▪️ Rises in Chenna Kesava hill of Nandidurg range, in Chikkaballapura district of Karnataka.

▪️ Flows in States of Andhra P. And Karnataka.

▪️ Tributaries :-

• Left bank - Jayamangali, Kunderu and Sagileru.

• Right bank - Chiravati, Papagni, and Cheyyeru.

▪️ Somasila project lies here.

▪️ Important town is Nellore.

▪️ Flows in Bay of Bengal.

▪️Indus River
(part 2/2)

▪️ Tributaries :

Left bank : Zanskar, Panjnad (Chenab, Jhelum, Ravi, Beas, satluj)

Right bank : Shyok, Gilgit, Kabul, Gomal, Kurram.

▪️ The Rigveda describes several rivers, including one named "Sindhu". The Rigvedic "Sindhu" is thought to be the present-day Indus river.

CAUVERY RIVER

▪️ Karnataka is readying itself to wage a legal battle in the Supreme Court against Tamil Nadu’s ambitious Cauvery-Vellaru-Vaigai-Gundar river linking project.

▪️ Tamil Nadu is trying to utilise surplus 45 Tmcft of water.

▪️ Karnataka Government says, “this project is not in accordance with the Interstate River Water Disputes Act.

▪️ According to the Act, surplus water should also be adjudicated and the tribunal has to decide on it.

🔆LANDLOCKED COUNTRIES OF AFRICA

Out of Africa’s 55 countries, 16 of them are landlocked: Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Central African Republic, Chad, Ethiopia, Lesotho, Malawi, Mali, Niger, Rwanda, South Sudan, Swaziland, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Location of Ethiopia is important. Please see that it is part of Africa’s Horn. Other countries in Africa's horn are Djibouti, Eritrea and Somalia.

▪️ Length - 2880Km of which 709Km in India.

▪️ Originates - From Bokhar chu(Glacier) in northern slope of Mt. Kailash.

▪️ It enters India near Damchok.

▪️ Flows in India through the Leh district in J&K only.

▪️ Enters Pakistan near Chillar in the Dardistan region.

▪️ Important Tributaries :-

Right bank - Shyok, Gilgit, Nubra, Kabul.

Left bank - Zaskar, satluj, beas, ravi, chenab, Jhelum.

▪️The river Sarda (Kali or Kali Ganga) joins it in the plain before it finally meets the Ganga at Chhapra.

▪️The Ghaghara joins the Ganga a few kilometres downstream of Chhapra in Bihar.

▪️The river has a high flood frequency and has shifted its course several times.

▪️Tributaries Koilar rivers, Khanua river, Khekhra Hirna, Jethan, Maun, Duhari, Kanchi

YAMUNA RIVER

▪️ Longest and Western-most tributary of Ganges.

▪️ Source - Yamunotri Glacier in westernslopes of Banderpunch.

▪️ It makes boundary between Delhi and Haryana.

▪️ It passes through Delhi, Mathura, Agra and flows southward till joins Ganges in Prayagraj.

▪️ It creates highly fertile Alluvial, Yamuna-Ganges Doab region.

▪️ Important Tributaries of Yamuna - Chambal, Betwa, ken and Tons.

SATLUJ RIVER

▪️ Other names - Satadru or Satudri.

▪️ Called Langechan Khambab in Tibet.

▪️ Rises from Rakas Lake situated near Mansarovar lake in Tibet.

▪️ At the pass of Shipki la it enters HP where it cuts through Zaskar and Himalayan ranges.

▪️ Below Bhakra Dam it enters in Punjab plains.

▪️ It meets Beas in the south-west corner of Kapurthala.

▪️ From Ferozepur to Fazilka it forms boundary between India and Pakistan.

▪️ During it onward journey, it receives collective drainage of Ravi, Chenab & Jhelum River.

▪️ It joins Indus few Kms above Mithankot.
