▪️Ganga River (part 1/3)

▪️The Ganga originates as Bhagirathi from the Gangotri glacier in Uttar Kashi District of Uttarakhand at an elevation of 7,010 m.

▪️Alaknanda River joins Bhagirathi at Devaprayag.

▪️From Devapryag the river is called as Ganga.

▪️At Farraka, it bifurcates into Bhagirathi Hugli in West Bengal and Padma Meghna in Bangladesh (it ceases to be known as the Ganga after Farraka).

▪️Brahmaputra (or the Jamuna as it is known here) joins Padma-Meghna

▪️Ganga River (part 2/3)

▪️The total length of the Ganga river from its source to its mouth (measured along the Hugli) is 2,525 km.

▪️ It covers states of Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Bihar, West Bengal, Uttarakhand, Jharkhand, Haryana, Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh and Union Territory of Delhi.

▪️ Tributaries :

▪️Left : Ramganga, Gomati, Ghaghara, Gandak, Burhi Gandak, Kosi, Mahananda and Brahmaputra

▪️ Right : Yamuna, Tamsa, Sone, Punpun, phalgu, kiul, Karamnasa, Chandan, Damodar

▪️The Five Prayags

▪️Devaprayag, the place of confluence of Bhagirathi river and Alaknanda river.

▪️Rudraprayag, the place of confluence of Mandakini river and Alaknanda river.

▪️Nandaprayag, the place of confluence of Nandakini river and Alaknanda river.

▪️Karnaprayag, the place of confluence of Pindar river and Alaknanda river.

▪️Vishnuprayag, the place of confluence of Dhauliganga river and Alaknanda river.

▪️ Yamuna River

▪️ The Yamuna, is the second-largest tributary river of the Ganga and the longest tributary in India.

▪️Originates from the Yamunotri glacier near Bandarpoonch peaks in the Mussoorie range of the lower Himalayas in Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand.

▪️It meets the Ganges at the Sangam (where Kumbh mela is held) in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh after flowing through Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana and Delhi.

▪️Length: 1376 km

▪️ Tributaries : Chambal, Betwa, Ken, Sindh, Baghain,Rishiganga

▪️ Yamuna is one of the National Waterways of India, designated as NW110 in Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.

▪️Imp. Dam: Lakhwar-Vyasi Dam (Uttarakhand), Tajewala Barrage Dam (Haryana) etc.

▪️Gomati River

▪️ Gomti, Gumti or Gomati River is a
tributary of the Ganga.

▪️The Gomti originates from Gomat
Taal which formally known as
Fulhaar jheel, near Madho Tanda,
Pilibhit, India.

▪️ It extends 900 km through Uttar
Pradesh and meets the Ganga River
near Saidpur, Kaithi in Ghazipur.

▪️ Length: 900 km

▪️Lucknow is on Gomati.

▪️According to Hindu mythology, the river is the daughter of the Hindu sage Vashist; bathing in the Gomti on Ekadashi (the eleventh day of the two lunar phases of the Hindu calendar month) can wash away sins.

▪️ According to Bhagavata Purana one of Hinduism's major religious works, the Gomti is one of India's transcendental rivers.

▪️The rare Gomti Chakra is found there.

▪️Ramganga River

▪️The Ramganga river rises in the
Garhwal district of Uttarakhand.

▪️It enters Ganga Plain near Kalagarh.

▪️Ramganga is comparatively a small river rising in the Garhwal hills near Gairsain.

▪️ It is a tributary of the river Ganges, originates from the high altitude zone
of 800m-900m.

▪️ it joins the Ganga near Kannauj.

▪️Tributaries : Khoh, Gangan, Aril ,Kosi

▪️Koshi River (part 1/2)

▪️ Koshi River is a tributary of the Ganga.

▪️The Kosi is an antecedent river with its source to the north of Mount Everest in Tibet, where its main stream Arun rises.

▪️ The Kosi river consists of seven streams namely Sut Kosi, Tamba Kosi, Talkha, Doodh Kosi, Botia Kosi, Arun and Tamber and is popularly known as Saptakoshi.

▪️Countries: India, Nepal

▪️They unite at Triveni north of the Mahabharata Range to form the Kosi.

▪️Koshi River (part 2/2)

▪️ The river enters the Tarai of Nepal after cutting a narrow gorge in the Mahabharata Range. And it joins the Ganga.

▪️The river channel is braided and it shifts its course frequently. This has resulted in frequent devastating floods and has converted large tracts of cultivable land into waste land in Bihar.

▪️Thus the river is often termed as the "Sorrow of Bihar".

▪️Embankments for flood control have been constructed as a joint venture of India and Nepal

▪️Chambal River

▪️It is one of the most pollution-free rivers of India

▪️The Chambal rises in the highlands of Janapao Hills (700 m) in the Vindhyan Range.

▪️It joins the Yamuna in Etawah district of Uttar Pradesh.

▪️Tributaries: Banas, Kali Sindh, Parbati.

▪️ Power Projects/ Dam: Gandhi Sagar Dam, Rana Pratap Sagar Dam, Jawahar Sagar Dam, and Kota Barrage.

▪️The National Chambal Sanctuary is located along river Chambal on the tri-junction of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh. It is known for critically endangered gharial, the red-crowned roof turtle, and the endangered Ganges river dolphin

BANAS RIVER

▪️ Originates at Aravallis in the Khamnor hills near Kumbalgarh.

▪️ Joins Chambal on Rajasthan-MP border near Sawai-Madhopur.

▪️ Tributaries :-

• Right bank - Berach, Manali

• Left bank - Kothari, Dheel, Sohadara, Morel

▪️ Major Dam - Bisalpur

▪️ Betwa River

▪️Betwa or Vetravati originates in Vindhya Range just north of   Hoshangabad in Madhya Pradesh and flows north-east through Madhya Pradesh and flow through Orchha to Uttar Pradesh.

▪️ It meets Yamuna at Hamirpur town in Uttar Pradesh.

▪️ Length: 590 km

▪️ Tributary- Dhasan

▪️Dams :Rajghat Dam ,Matatila Dam ,Parichha Dam ,Dhurwara Dam

▪️Brahmaputra River

▪️The Brahmaputra (meaning the son of Brahma).

▪️It is 2,900 km in length.

▪️Source: Chemayungdung glacier (Kailas Range) at an elevation of about 5,150 m. It’s source is very close to the sources of Indus and Satluj.

▪️Mariam La separates the source of the Brahmaputra from the Manasarovar Lake.

▪️ In the vast Ganges Delta, it merges with the Padma, the popular name of the river Ganges in Bangladesh, and finally, after merging with Padma, it becomes the Meghna and from here, it flows as Meghna river before emptying into the Bay of Bengal

▪️ Tributaries :

Left - Dibang river, Dhansiri river, Lohit river and kolong river

Right - kameng river, Manas river, Teesta river, Subansiri river.

▪️Mahananda River

▪️Mahananda River is a trans-boundary river that flows through the Indian states of West Bengal, Bihar and Bangladesh.

▪️ The Mahananda is another important tributary of the Ganga rising in the Darjeeling hills.

▪️ Countries- India, Bangladesh

▪️ States- West Bengal, Bihar

▪️ Mahananda originates in Himalayas: Paglajhora Falls on Mahaldiram Hill near Chimli, east of Kurseong in Darjeeling district at an elevation of 2,100 metres (6,900 ft).

▪️It joins the Ganga as its last left bank tributary in West Bengal.

▪️tributaries Balason, Mechi, Kankai and River Kalindri.
