Please note that the $fp (Frame Pointer) is sometimes referred to as $s8, as it can be used as an additional saved register if the frame pointer is not being used in a particular function. Also, $k0-$k1 are reserved for use by the kernel, and should not be used in user programs. The $zero register always holds the value 0. The $at register is reserved for the assembler, to handle things like loading large constants that can’t be loaded with a single instruction. The $v0-$v1 and $a0-$a3 registers are used for function return values and arguments, respectively. The $t0-$t9 registers are temporaries, and the $s0-$s7 registers are saved registers. The $gp, $sp, and $ra registers are used for the global pointer, stack pointer, and return address, respectively.
