Ans. The puritan Age is one of the most remarkable periods in the history of English literature. In this period, there are some distinguished characteristics which make the period. The invention and flourishment of metaphysical poetry is the chief feature of the Puritan Age. The term "metaphysical" was applied more or less accidentally to designate a particular group of poets. John Dryden has firstly mentioned the term "metaphysics".

He says "Donne affects metaphysics ". "Meta" means beyond and "physics" means body. So "metaphysics" means something beyond passion and body. A new school of poetry was innovated by John Donne. The school of poetry writes about body, soul, love, sex, marriage death and here after life. Henry Vaughan, George Herbert, Andrew Marvell are the member of the metaphysical school of poetry. They show the spiritual love and love between the body and soul in their writings.

John Donne is acclaimed the founder of the metaphysical school of poetry. In most of his poems, he portrays the theme with the metaphysical conceit in his writing ; all of his poems are dealt with the theme of love between the body and soul.
