"Statement from Former President Jair Bolsonaro

➡️ I received with a sense of responsibility the news of the letter sent by President Donald J. Trump to the Brazilian government, notifying and justifying the tariff increase on Brazilian products. I want to express my respect and admiration for the Government of the United States.

➡️ This measure is a direct result of Brazil’s departure from its historical commitments to freedom, the rule of law, and the values that have always supported our relationship with the free world. This would never have happened under my government.

➡️ This witch hunt — a term used by President Trump himself — is not just against me. It targets millions of Brazilians who fight for freedom and refuse to live under the shadow of authoritarianism. What is at stake is freedom of expression, of the press, of conscience, and of political participation. I know Donald Trump’s firmness and courage in defending these principles.

➡️ Brazil is rapidly heading toward international isolation and shame. The escalation of abuse, censorship, and political persecution must stop. The warning has been given, and there is no more room for omission.

➡️ I call on the branches of government to act urgently and present measures to restore institutional normalcy. It is still possible to save Brazil.
