Ethereum Hard-Forks to Reverse The DAO Hack

We're posting a thread on an Ethereum story today because of what it settled: how far they went to undo a theft and why Bitcoin has never gone there. Brief thread... 🧵👇

2/9 - Bitcoin has never reversed a transaction, not for Mt. Gox, not for any hack since, no matter the size of the loss. That rule sounds simple until you watch another major blockchain break it in public, on purpose. This is that story.

3/9 - The DAO was a decentralized venture fund built on Ethereum, letting anyone pool ether and vote on projects to back. In June 2016 an attacker exploited a bug letting one function call itself recursively before the balance updated, draining funds into…

4/9 - The theft came to roughly $60 million at the time. But the DAO's own rules gave the attacker a 27 day wait before withdrawing anything, and that clock is what turned a hack into a scramble: Ethereum's developers had under a month to decide what to do.

5/9 - The option that won out was a hard fork: rewrite the chain's rules so the drained funds moved into a new contract letting original token holders withdraw them, as if the theft never settled. It was pitched as a rescue, but it meant editing a supposedly…
