Today is Lightning Network Torch Day ⚡️
A day that marked a turning point for Bitcoin payments.
In early 2019, the Bitcoin community decided to test the Lightning Network through real transactions.
It started when a Twitter user, hodlonaut, sent 100,000 sats via Lightning. ⚡️
He asked the recipient to add 10,000 sats and pass it forward.
The goal was simple: keep the payment moving, wallet to wallet, test usage.
What followed was a relay. 🌍
The LN Torch crossed dozens of countries, settling instantly low fees.
Each transaction showed that Bitcoin payments could move peer-to-peer, without intermediaries, at internet speed.
As the torch traveled, it reached figures like Jack Dorsey, Elizabeth Stark, Andreas Antonopoulos, and Samson Mow.
Samson Mow held the torch at Blockstream, before passing it on via a Lightning invoice broadcast over Blockstream’s satellite network. 🛰⚡️
In April 2019, the torch was donated to Bitcoin for Venezuela. 🇻🇪
