🇧🇷🤡📈💸 — Fiscal deficit hits record high under Lula's government (PT) and surpasses pandemic numbers

🔽 The consolidated public sector recorded a nominal deficit of R$ 1.043 trillion in the 12 months up to April, surpassing for the first time the peak recorded during the COVID-19 pandemic of R$ 1.017 trillion.

💥 The result, which represents 9.41% of GDP (Gross Domestic Product), includes the payment of R$ 776.3 billion in interest on the debt over the 12 months up to April, also a record in the historical series, which began in 2002.

❗️ The Selic (basic interest rate) at high levels for a prolonged period contributed to the higher nominal deficit and consequently increased public debt. However, the primary value, excluding financial expenses, also worsened. It totaled R$ 266.5 billion in the 12 months up to April.

‼️ The deterioration of public accounts increased the General Government Gross Debt (DBGG), which reached 76% of GDP, the highest level since April 2022. It increased by R$ 8.4 trillion, a rise of 4.3 percentage points recorded under President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT).
