R to @alizaeteri: Within Europe, most internet traffic never touches an undersea cable.
Instead, it travels through a dense network of fiber-optic cables buried beneath cities, highways and borders.
Send a message from Germany to France… and it will usually stay entirely on land.
The ocean cables become critical when data needs to cross continents.

Ali Zaeteri / @alizaeteri:
R to @alizaeteri: How cables are laid?
🔹Special ships carry thousands of km of cable coiled onboard
🔹Engineers first map a safe route (avoiding volcanoes, steep cliffs, etc.)
🔹The ship slowly moves and unspools the cable into the ocean
🔹Near coasts, machines bury the cable under the seabed for protection
It’s a slow, precise operation…
Sometimes the cable is laid at just a few kilometers per hour.

R to @alizaeteri: Key connectivity hubs include:
Egypt: a critical link between Europe and Asia
Singapore: one of the world’s largest Asia-Pacific cable hubs
The UK & France: major gateways for transatlantic internet traffic
Millions of gigabytes pass through these routes every second.
