🇧🇷⚖️⛓ — The First Panel of Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court (STF) unanimously sentenced Filipe Martins, former Special Advisor for International Affairs in the Bolsonaro (PL) government, to 21 years and 6 months in prison, under an initial closed regime

⭐ Casting the final vote, the panel’s presiding justice, Flávio Dino (former minister under Lula), emphasized the “technical nature” of the judgment.

“This is not about revenge. Criminal adjudication requires the judge to sterilize their subjectivity as much as possible, because judgment under Criminal Law is never purely retributive. We are not here to deal with an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth.”

👨‍⚖ Justice Alexandre de Moraes, the rapporteur and the victim in the case, endorsed the statement and said that the proceedings are not a form of revenge. He also highlighted doubts regarding Filipe Martins’ actual whereabouts during the turn of the year from 2022 to 2023. Nevertheless, he decided to convict him anyway.

“The state’s response is not revenge, but it must be harsh in order to punish those who tried to bring an end to democracy in Brazil and failed.”
