On January 16, more than a thousand people in Kobane protested against Turkish air strikes on civilians, chanting slogans in support of the Syrian Democratic Forces.
On January 18, five civilian casualties from the Turkish air strikes were brought back to Kobane for burial. Among them were an ambulance driver and a married couple, leaving their 7-month-old child orphaned.
Later that afternoon, a convoy was finally able to return from Tishreen, where hundreds of people gathered to welcome their loved ones.

"I made my first rescue at sea on May 2019, during my fifth rotation in the then still young project Mediterranea Saving Humans. My arrival aboard the Mare Jonio—a 70’s tug boat repurposed as a mother ship for the organization—was, that time, quite gradual. Landing on Lampedusa Island, where the boat was docked for a needed stopover, I should have taken over from other fellow rescuers who were disembarking, to join as RHIB driver – rigid hull inflatable boats that we use to reach boats in distress. Yet, we spent some time on land preparing to set sail, followed by some days at sea amongst drills and fixing equipment. This slight delay gave me the time to slowly walk into a transforming landscape."

For ten years, Working Class History has meticulously documented small and grandiose acts of popular resistance across the globe, indexing the actions across time, space, and several key themes, such as resistance to foreign occupation, fascism, and labor exploitation. As we look to the past in this month’s issue, we are sharing snapshots of significant April moments throughout history. Remembering these events, which include the definitive end of the Portuguese Empire, a labor action in Japan, the destruction of a symbol which has been mistakenly associated with working class revolution for centuries, and a preventable escalation of police violence in the United States.
