New Post And Tell the Believing Women Not to Show off Their Adornment, Except for What is Apparent: ibn Taymiyah

Allah gives the command in surah al-Nur for the believing women to not show off their adornment except for what is apparent. There have been several different explanations for the phrase "except for what is apparent" from the salaf. In this article, we bring ibn al-Jawzi's list of these statements, al-Shinqitee's categorization of the statements, and then ibn Taymiyah's discussion and reconciliation of them.

Allah offers a threat to the disbelievers in surah al-Zukhruf [43] when He says:

[وَمَن يَعْشُ عَن ذِكْرِ الرَّحْمَـٰنِ نُقَيِّضْ لَهُ شَيْطَانًا فَهُوَ لَهُ قَرِينٌ]

"And whoever becomes dim-sighted to remembrance of al-Rahman, We appoint a shaytan for him, and he will be his companion." (36)

Imam al-Baghawi included the following narration in his tafsir of this ayah:

[قال القرظي : يولي ظهره عن ذكر الرحمن وهو القرآن . ]

Muhammad ibn Ka'b al-Qurathi said: he turns his back on the remembrance of al-Rahman, which is the Qur'an

Upcoming Series Three Complete Explanations of Ayah al-Kursi

We are pleased to announce that over the coming three months we plan to publish three new translations of complete explanations of Ayah al-Kursi from reliable and recommended books of tafsir. The three books are:

1) al-Tafsir al-Muyassar: A very introductory work that is effectively like a gloss or translation of each ayah with some additional notes, benefits or points of clarification. This work was commissioned by the Ministry of Islamic Affairs of Saudi Arabia to serve as a basic salafi tafsir.

2) The Thematic Tafsir of Sheikh 'Abd al-Rahman al-Sa'di (Taysir al-Lateef al-Mannaan): After writing his complete tafsir of the Qur'an, some students suggested that he make a condensed tafsir even more accessible to the common reader, resulting in this work. It explains select ayaat with simple language and a focus on how their contents can be applied in the life of the Muslim.

3) Tawfeeq al-Rahman of Sheikh Faisal Aal Mubarak: A wonderful abridgement or digest of the most reliable books of tafsir; ibn Jarir al-Tabari, ibn Kathir and al-Baghawi. This book is composed almost exclusively of choice statements of the salaf and great scholars of the past.

All of these translations come from works written and recommended by salafi scholars, and all three were written with the non-expert reader in mind. We will publish them in the order mentioned above over the course of three months, moving from the most fundamental to a more detailed introductory work to a focus on narrated statements and introducing some more advanced concepts. We hope that by following along with this series, readers will gain a deeper and more well-grounded understanding of Ayah al-Kursi and a better appreciation for the books of tafsir.

The first part of the series will be published in mid-September.

Allah describes Himself near the end of surah al-Fath by saying:

[هُوَ الَّذِي أَرْسَلَ رَسُولَهُ بِالْهُدَىٰ وَدِينِ الْحَقِّ لِيُظْهِرَهُ عَلَى الدِّينِ كُلِّهِ ۚ وَكَفَىٰ بِاللَّـهِ شَهِيدًا ]

"He is the One who sent His Messenger with guidance and the true religion in order that it to make it superior to all other religions. And Allah is sufficient as a witness." [48:28]

Commenting on this ayah, al-haafidh ibn Kathir wrote:

[أي : بالعلم النافع والعمل الصالح ; فإن الشريعة تشتمل على شيئين : علم وعمل ، فالعلم الشرعي صحيح ، والعمل الشرعي مقبول ، فإخباراتها حق وإنشاءاتها عدل]

Meaning: who sent His Messenger with beneficial knowledge and righteous actions. For the sharee'ah is made up of two things: knowledge and actions. It is the legislated knowledge that is true and accurate, and it is the legislated actions that are accepted; its information is the truth and and its commandments are just.

[Tafsir ibn Kathir 7/364]
