Yesterday, I listened to Jawar’s most anticipated interviews on OMN and Ubuntu TV. Judging from these two interviews, it has become clear that Jawar’s career as a distinctly Oromo politician is over. And sadly so.

In what looks like a charm offensive intended to calm down (or to woo) the rather restive (and genocidal) Ethio-Amhara elite and their international patrons (especially the US and Canada), my friend Jawar Siraj Mohammed seems to have launched his official campaign to become the next Ethio-Amhara Prime Minister.

In so doing, he seems to have chosen to trace and follow Abiy’s footsteps. In effect, Jawar has declared his intention to become another Abiy: just lighter, brighter, younger, and smarter. And perhaps kinder and more rational, too.

While we wish him luck in his endeavours, we reckon that the long and arduous road to freedom (and possible redemption) is yet to be traveled.

To praise your being in prison as a godsend that shielded you from taking sides is a refusal to decide. And to refuse to decide, to refuse to take sides in the context of this genocidal madness (and to choose to be a neutral spectator), is simply a betrayal of one's own principles. No, It's not Oromo Realignment!

No, it is not Oromo politics that is realigning itself with Abiy (and the genocidal regime he represents); it's OFC, the quintessentially Ethiopianist party with Oromo constituency, coming home to its own.

Beyond that, it is Jawar positioning himself to be, or to appear like, a worthy replacement of Abiy in 2030 (or possibly in 2025). It's Jawar following in the footsteps of Abiy in distancing himself from the Oromo cause because that is the price he thinks he has to pay in order to become an Ethiopian Prime Minister.

Jawaru, kun siif hin malus, siin hin madaalus. Dhiisi! "I am Oromo First " jettee jalqabdee, "I am Ethiopia first" jettee xummuruuf deemaa jirta. Nuun hin qaanessiin, adaraa! Of eegi, obboleesso!

You do understand that an Ethiopia that forces you to distance yourself from Oromummaa to let you become a Prime Minister is not a redeemed Ethiopia; it's an undemocratic, unjust, and brutally alienating empire that (re)arranges your relationship to the polity in a hierarchic order. It's an Ethiopia that seeks you to "grow up" to become fully Ethiopian by distancing yourself from Oromummaa and Oromia. (It's this Ethiopia that lauded you for being "mature" these past two days. Don't you see how infantalizing that is?)

This Ethiopia is not the one you wanted to reimagine a few years ago. This Ethiopia is not open to reform. It has consumed all Oromos with the same political sensibilities as yours. (Y)our hero, Haile Fiidaa, is only an example.

An Ethiopia that consumed Hacaaluu Hundeessaa--and triumphantly vowed that you (Jawar) are next--an Ethiopia that has tried to consume you a thousand times more before, is not the Ethiopia you should sacrifice your people's cause for. It is just not worth it.

It won't help you. It won't help your party (OFC). It won't help Ethiopia. (If it could, we wouldn't have seen the madness under Abiy.)

This Ethiopia will continue to be "a phoenix in arms", one you will be presiding over, harassed from all sides, and running wildly--much like Abiy--as a gun-totting mad man that eventually meets his end before resolving the historical contradiction ingrained in the colonial-imperial Ethiopian state form.

And that is leaving it exactly at the place where you found it. And that is not what you want to do.

You can do better. Because I know you know better.
