Showing up to school in Detroit could now put some extra money in students' pockets.

Detroit Public Schools Community District is expanding its “Perfect Attendance Pays” initiative, which rewards students for maintaining perfect attendance during designated periods of the school year.

Under the program, eligible high school students can receive $100 per week, while middle school students can receive $50 per week through Visa gift cards for attending every class.

According to the district, approximately 12,800 high school students participated last year, while chronic absenteeism reportedly dropped by roughly 10 percentage points.

The program is particularly aimed at periods when attendance traditionally declines, including the months between January and March.
