In the German auto industry, as few people work as they have not worked since 2005. According to the Federal Statistical Office, 42,300 jobs have disappeared within the last year alone, the number of employees fell to 691,500 at the end of the first half of 2026. But the historic low does not yet represent a large part of the announced cuts.
“The avalanche does not yet have its full size, but is only beginning to roll,” warns Ferdinand Dudenhöffer, founder of the Center for Automotive Research (CAR) in Bochum, at the request of the Berliner Zeitung. The next few years would be “bitter.” Even if things go well, the German car industry will shrink to only around 500,000 employees by 2030 – and even after that, no end to the reduction can be seen.
