Ok, let's have a quick summary of how we (the Israelites) got to the position that we find ourselves in right now:
1. In Numbers 33:55 Yahuah warned us that if we do not drive out the inhabitants of the promised land, they will become pricks in our eyes and thorns in our sides.
2. In Joshua 9:19-27 he failed to exterminate the Gibeonites, instead choosing to listen to the leaders of the whole congregation of Israelites. This is the same Joshua who 40 years earlier along with Caleb, were just two of the twelve spies who believed Yahuah's promise. So, what had changed? Why did he choose to disobey Yahuah now?
3. In Joshua 23:9-16 he either had an epiphany or was rebuked by Eleazar regarding his earlier decision not to exterminate the Gibeonites.
4. Judges chapter 1 starts off well for the Israelites, with Judah and Simeon capturing a whole string of cities, driving out the Canaanites. Same for the house of Joseph. The chapter ends off badly listing all the tribes who failed to drive out the Canaanites in their territories.
5. See the screenshot below. In Judges 2:1-5 Yahuah delivered the gut punch to the Israelites, because they did not obey Him, He will no longer drive out their enemies before them, saying that they will become thorns in their sides, and that their gods will become a snare to the Israelites.

Prophetic words indeed! As early as Judges 2:11 the Israelites forsook Yahuah in favour of Baal worship, necessitating the Great Tribulation and the 2nd coming of Yahu'shuah to drive out the Canaanites from the promised land. The second Joshua completing what the first Joshua failed to do.
