According to police and family, on December 20, Bruno Valenzuela, 31, was caring for Maverick, 5, at the child's parents' home in Port Jefferson Station.
Authorities said the child began coughing and crying when Valenzuela violently slapped him on the back and chest, causing bruising.
The child's father, Christopher Brower, said that Maverick has cerebral palsy, complex medical needs, is nonverbal, and cannot walk.
