A top Biden administration medical adviser said Tuesday he did not know why COVID-19 cases continue decreasing in Texas after he and others harshly criticized the stateโs governor for rolling back a mask mandate last month.
โIt can be confusing because you may see a lag and a delay, because often, you have to wait a few weeks before you see the effect of what youโre doing right now,โ Dr. Anthony Fauci, one of President Joe Bidenโs top COVID-19 advisers, said during an appearance on MSNBC.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbottโs mask mandate ended on March 10.
โThere are a lot of things that go into that. I mean, when you say that theyโve had a lot of activity on the outside like ball games, Iโm not really quite sure, it could be theyโre doing things outdoors. Itโs very difficult to just one on one compare that. You just have to see in the long range, I hope they continue to tick down. If they do, that would be great,โ Fauci added.
โBut thereโs always that concern, when you pull back on methods, particularly things like indoor dining and bars that are crowded, you can see a delay, and then all of a sudden, tick right back up. Weโve been fooled before by situations where people begin to open up, nothing happens, and then all of a sudden, several weeks later, things start exploding on you. So we got to be careful. We donโt prematurely judge that.โ

Several Florida Democrats are challenging a report by the CBS News program โ60 Minutesโ that attempted to paint the stateโs vaccination partnership with the Publix grocery store chain as nefarious.
The program on April 4 explored the COVID-19 vaccine rollout in Florida, which has experienced a similar COVID-19 death rate to California and other states despite having much looser restrictions.
In one heated exchange, a reporter pressed Gov. Ron DeSantis on the use of Publix stores to administer vaccines, claiming the fact that Publix contributed $100,000 to his political action committee before the chain was chosen could be seen as evidence of a โpay-for-playโ scheme.
DeSantis called the allegation โa fake narrative,โ offering a lengthy explanation of what had unfolded. It included state officials reaching out to pharmacies besides CVS and Walgreens because those two companies were tasked with delivering vaccines to long-term care facilities. Publix was the first to say it was ready for the second set of distribution and administration.
DeSantis also said he visited four different Publix stores during a trial run and found feedback was overwhelmingly positive, and that he solicited advice from Palm Beach officials.
โHereโs some of the options: We can do more drive-through sites, we can give more to hospitals, we can do the Publix, we can do this. They calculated that 90 percent of their seniors live within a mile and a half of a Publix. And they said, โWe think that would be the easiest thing for our residents,'โ he said.

The British governmentโs plan to introduce COVID-status certification has met with resistance from lawmakers from across the political spectrum.
In a review published on Monday, the government said it will begin to trial COVID-status certification in certain settings, including large events, as England gradually exits the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus lockdown.
The government said it believes that โCOVID-status certification could have an important role to play both domestically and internationallyโ to โallow some freedoms to be restored more safely.โ
The COVID Recovery Group (CRG), a group of Tory MPs who are sceptical about COVID-19 lockdown measures, said that โParliament must give approvalโ if the government wants to introduce COVID certificates.
โTrying to do it by the back door by linking them to social distancing rules isnโt on,โ CRG chair Mark Harper wrote on Twitter.
The Liberal Democrats also reiterated their opposition to the idea.
โBy rolling out COVID ID card trials this Government is going to damage businesses and our freedoms. @LibDems are clear, we will oppose these illiberal, unworkable and unnecessary plans,โ said Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats, on Twitter.
Jonathan Ashworth, shadow health secretary for the main opposition Labour party, said he would not support such certificates for everyday activities.
โIโm not going to support a policy thatโhere in my Leicester constituencyโif someone wants to go into Next or H&M they have to produce a vaccination certificate on their phone,โ he told the BBCโs Breakfast programme on Tuesday.
Minister for Vaccine Deployment Nadhim Zahawi defended the idea, saying: โItโs only responsible as we see how this virus behaves, as we see how other countries are utilising technology to make sure that they keep the virus under control, then we should look at the same thing.โ
The government said in the review that other countries are already developing their own certification systems, such as Israelโs โGreen Passโ and the European Unionโs โdigital green certificate.โ
Zahawi told Sky News that any scheme would be designed not to be discriminatory, suggesting it would involve data on COVID-19 tests, not just vaccines. But he added no decision had been taken, and lawmakers would get a vote on any plans.
Last week, dozens of British parliamentarians from across the political spectrum joined hands in opposition to the possible introduction of COVID-status certificates.
Sir Keir Starmer, leader of the main opposition Labour Party, said in a newspaper interview that requiring vaccine passports for social activities would be against the โBritish instinct.โ
Sir Graham Brady, chairman of the influential 1922 Committee of backbench Conservative MPs, called COVID-19 certification โdivisive and discriminatory.โ
Representatives of the British pub industry also wrote to Johnson to express their โoutrageโ at the idea of introducing COVID-19 certification for hospitality venues.
โThis could prevent millions of young people visiting the pub for months, unless they get themselves tested in advance,โ they said.

โIโm not going to support a policy thatโhere in my Leicester constituencyโif someone wants to go into Next or H&M they have to produce a vaccination certificate on their phone,โ he told the BBCโs Breakfast programme on Tuesday.
Minister for Vaccine Deployment Nadhim Zahawi defended the idea, saying: โItโs only responsible as we see how this virus behaves, as we see how other countries are utilising technology to make sure that they keep the virus under control, then we should look at the same thing.โ
The government said in the review that other countries are already developing their own certification systems, such as Israelโs โGreen Passโ and the European Unionโs โdigital green certificate.โ
Zahawi told Sky News that any scheme would be designed not to be discriminatory, suggesting it would involve data on COVID-19 tests, not just vaccines. But he added no decision had been taken, and lawmakers would get a vote on any plans.
Last week, dozens of British parliamentarians from across the political spectrum joined hands in opposition to the possible introduction of COVID-status certificates.
Sir Keir Starmer, leader of the main opposition Labour Party, said in a newspaper interview that requiring vaccine passports for social activities would be against the โBritish instinct.โ
Sir Graham Brady, chairman of the influential 1922 Committee of backbench Conservative MPs, called COVID-19 certification โdivisive and discriminatory.โ
Representatives of the British pub industry also wrote to Johnson to express their โoutrageโ at the idea of introducing COVID-19 certification for hospitality venues.
โThis could prevent millions of young people visiting the pub for months, unless they get themselves tested in advance,โ they said.

The UK rollout of Modernaโs COVID-19 vaccine has begun in Wales, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Wednesday.
โThe Moderna vaccine rollout begins today, starting with Carmarthen in Wales,โ he wrote on Twitter.
โWe have ordered 17 million doses that will be going into arms across the UK in the coming weeks,โ he said, adding,
โPlease get your jab as soon as you are contacted.โ
Health Secretary Matt Hancock said he was โdelightedโ over the rollout.
โThe UK government has secured doses on behalf of the entire nation,โ he wrote on Twitter.
Public health is a devolved policy area in the UK, which means that the devolved administrations in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland are primarily in charge of the local fight against the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus, also known as the novel coronavirus.
Supplies of the vaccine arrived in Wales on Tuesday, and 5,000 doses were sent to vaccination centres in the Hywel Dda University Health Board area, the Welsh government said.
On Wednesday morning, Elle Taylor, 24, an unpaid carer for her 82-year-old grandmother, became the first person in the UK to receive the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine at West Wales General Hospital, Sky News reported.
The UK medicines regulator, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), authorised the Moderna vaccine on Jan. 8. It became the third vaccine to be approved after the Pfizer/BioNTech and the Oxford/AstraZeneca jabs.
Moderna uses the same mRNA technology as Pfizerโs shots but can be stored at normal fridge temperatures unlike its rival U.S. vaccine, which must be kept and shipped at ultra-low temperatures.
The shot is expected to be used in the rest of the United Kingdom by the middle of April.
According to the UK government, the Moderna vaccine is 94 percent effective in preventing COVID-19.
After the Moderna vaccine was rolled out in the United States, there have been some reports of adverse effects.
A 39-year-old healthy single mother from Utah died four days after taking a second dose of the Moderna vaccine on Feb. 1, though officials said there were no links between the vaccine and deaths in Utah.
