Researchers will deliberately inject Brits with dengue fever - a tropical disease found in Africa and the Caribbean - and let them carry on with their daily lives, risking the disease becoming endemic in the UK.

Nicknamed “breakbone fever,” dengue is usually transmitted by mosquitoes, which have begun to appear in the south-east, but the as-yet unapproved trial will see volunteers jabbed with it.

Dr Richard Ebright, a molecular biologist at Rutgers University, thinks the move is risky, and called for travel bans for the study participants because the government can’t control what people do after leaving the clinic.
