The European Medicines Agency website already lists the hotly debated vaccine by its new name.

"The name of the vaccine was changed to Vaxzevria on March 25, 2021". This info has recently appeared on the European Medicines Agency (EMA) website for Astra Zeneca's vaccine. Also, all current notifications for Astra Zeneca are already named "Vaxzevria (formerly Covid-19 vaccine Astra Zeneca)." The label as well as the packaging have also been changed, reports Läkemedelsverket, the Swedish Agency for Health Products.

There has been no official announcement from Astra Zeneca. Is this an attempt to salvage the tarnished image? After the vaccination with Astra Zeneca was recently suspended in many European countries due to reports of thromboses, and the protection rate of 79 percent is significantly lower than that of the competition, the uncertainty is still great among many.

40 percent would refuse
In addition, there is the recent announcement from Berlin and Munich that they will no longer vaccinate under 60-year-olds with Astra Zeneca for the time being. The same was decided in Canada for those under 55. It is only a precautionary measure - but the reputation already seems to be severely damaged.

According to a survey by the University of Vienna, if they were given the opportunity for vaccination next week, only 11 percent would "definitely" get vaccinated with Astra Zeneca, 40 percent "definitely not." By comparison, 43 percent would "definitely" take up the offer with Biontech/Pfizer, and only 13 percent would "definitely not."

Whether the name Vaxzevria will save the Swedish-British group from its image predicament - should this be the declared goal - is questionable. After all, the name of the Biontech/Pfizer vaccine is hardly ever mentioned in public. This is Comirnaty - but the talk is always only of Biontech/Pfizer.

Moderna, on the other hand, has stuck with the conceivably simple name "COVID-19 Vaccine Moderna". This was also the name of Astra Zeneca's vaccine: "COVID-19 Vaccine Astra Zeneca". From now on, the company prefers to use a tongue twister.

The recent verdict of a Brussels court – which ordered Belgium to lift all its coronavirus measures within 30 days – is a “disgrace for the government,” according to the Flemish rightwing N-VA party.

The ruling was “the accident waiting to happen for which the government closed its eyes,” said N-VA group leader Peter De Roover in the Chamber on Wednesday afternoon, calling it “a disgrace to the government.”

Earlier on Wednesday, a court ordered the Belgian State to lift “all coronavirus measures” within 30 days, as it considers the legal basis for them insufficient.

“This government has played with fire in implementing its coronavirus measures and it was warned about it, pretty much week after week in parliament,” De Roover said.

“Today, what I have been warning about for months is happening,” he added. “This government took enormous risks in opting for Ministerial Decrees in implementing freedom-restricting measures in its coronavirus policy. That warning, however, was ignored.”
The judge gave the Belgian State 30 days to provide a sound legal basis, or face a penalty of €5,000 per day that this period is exceeded, with a maximum limit of €200,000.

“Prime Minister De Croo declared on 31 January in ‘De Zevende Dag’ (Flemish television programme) that he did not want to add an additional uncertainty, especially a legal one,” De Roover said. “How sour those words sound today.”

He added that, by providing this 30-day period, “it is the judge who saves the government from total chaos, but the political damage is huge.”

Group leader of the other party in the opposition, the far-right Vlaams Belang, Barbara Pas also called the judgement “an unbelievable embarrassment for the government,” and added that she fears that the legal basis will now be rushed.

“I hope that the judgement will not be an argument for approving the pandemic law too quickly because there is still a lot of work to be done,” she added.

Additionally, Belgium’s pandemic law is currently in the works, and is supposed to provide “a permanent legal basis, for taking this kind of restrictive measures during a pandemic.”

The country’s system of implementing the coronavirus measures using Ministerial Decrees, which means without any input from parliament, has been criticised several times before.

Appealing against the court ruling is still possible, and the current coronavirus measures will not change for the time being. The verdict is currently being studied by the office of Interior Minister Annelies Verlinden.

The GOP-led Arizona state Senate on Wednesday announced that four firms have been hired to audit election results and recount the 2.1 million ballots cast in Maricopa County’s 2020 general election to ensure the legitimacy of President Joe Biden’s win.

Recounts are something state law doesn’t allow except in narrow circumstances, but a judge’s ruling (pdf) said the Senate has oversight powers that allow it to do whatever election review it wants.

The independent audit will be conducted by four out-of-state companies; Wake Technology Services, CyFIR, Digital Discovery, and Cyber Ninjas. A report is expected to be released in about 60 days, a press release from the state Senate says.
