Facebook’s hiring practices and promotions are under federal scrutiny following reports of widespread racial bias, according to Reuters. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission has launched a “systemic” investigation into the social media giant, indicating that it suspects internal policies may be contributing to a top-down culture of discrimination.

In July, Facebook operations program manager Oscar Veneszee Jr., who is Black, filed a complaint with the EEOC along with two applicants he recruited that Facebook later rejected. A third rejected applicant joined the case in December. The complaint, which they told NPR was filed on behalf of “all Black Facebook employees and applicants to Facebook,” alleges that the company fails to provide equal career opportunities for its Black workers, employs subjective evaluations that promote racial stereotypes, and discriminates against Black candidates. In short, Facebook has “a Black people problem,” Veneszee said at the time.

Reuters first reported the EEOC probe’s “systemic” designation on Friday, a notable development that could potentially pave the way for a class-action lawsuit down the line. The agency handles cases of purported workplace discrimination, often settling complaints through mediation or facilitating lawsuits against employers. But, as the outlet notes, the EEOC hasn’t brought specific allegations against Facebook at this time, and its investigation—which could last months—may very well turn up nothing.

Facebook did not immediately return Gizmodo’s request for comment, but we’ll update this blog when we hear back.
It’s far from the first time Facebook has come under fire for its lack of diversity. Just 3.9% of the company’s U.S. workforce is Black, and that figure drops to 3.4% among leadership positions, per Facebook’s most recent diversity report.

Democrat senators celebrated the upper chamber’s passage of the $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief measure on Saturday, framing it as “just the start of what Congress can do” moving forward.

The Senate passed the controversial $1.9 coronavirus relief bill on party lines Saturday, 50-49. Republican Rep. Dan Sullivan (R-AK) was not present for the vote, traveling home for a family emergency.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) celebrated the measure’s passage as “historic,” labeling it a “powerful” bill that will “make a real difference.”

“This is just the start of what Congress can do for working families. We must raise the minimum wage to $15/hr. We need to invest in infrastructure, k-12 education, and a clean energy economy,” she said, vowing to fight with “every tool in the toolbox to help our families and economy recover”:

The Finnish police broke into the home of a woman entrepreneur with “suspicion of a coronavirus”, and forcibly retrieved her from her home to take a COVID-testing in Iisalmi. The shocking arrest happened in the presence of her 11 year old child. At the hospital, Merike Sirelpuu was chained to her bed for a day and locked in a closed ward where she still is.

In an unprecedented way, the police has released her identity and picture, that media has now spread widely, because of her (according to the police) reluctance to give information on her movement and tracing info.

According to adverse incident reports collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) 966 individuals have died after having received an mRNA vaccine for COVID-19.
Between Dec. 14 and Feb. 19, 19,769 reports were made to the Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (VAERS) following immunizations with either the Moderna or Pfizer BioNTech mRNA vaccines (the only two vaccines given during the time period assessed). At this time, VAERS data is not available after Feb. 19.

The 966 deaths represent 5 percent of the total number of adverse events reports. Of those who died, 86, (8.9 percent) died on the same day they got the shot. An additional 129, (13.4 percent) died within one day. An additional 97 died within 2 days, and 61 within 3 days.
A total of 514 (53.2 percent) died within a week. 173 died within 7-13 days. 106 within 14-20 days.

85 percent of deaths occurred in individuals over 60; below 60 there were five deaths among those aged 20-29; 8 aged 30-39; 20 aged 40-49; and 57 aged 50-59.

President Donald Trump sent cease-and-desist letters demanding that Republican National Committee (RNC), the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), and the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) stop using his name and likeness, a Trump adviser told The Epoch Times.

In a speech before the Conservative Political Action Conference in Orlando last Sunday, Trump instructed supporters to donate to his campaign website and the Save America political action committee (PAC). The move suggested Trump was building financial leverage over the RNC. The cease-and-desist letters substantiate that theory.

Calls placed to the RNC, NRSC, and NRCC on Sunday went unanswered.

As of Sunday morning, the NRCC was still using Trump’s name in its standard messaging for new email list registrations. The home page of the NRSC advertised Trump t-shirts from its online shop.

“Stand with President Trump and House Conservatives,” the message stated. “Show your support for President Trump’s fight against Nancy Pelosi and the radical Democrats, by giving a gift today.”

According to Rich Baris, the director of Big Data Poll, Trump’s instructions to donate to his website and PAC handed him leverage over the RNC, which may take a financial hit as a result.

“If he wanted to, he could basically bankrupt them into submission,” Baris told The Epoch Times. “I know there’s a lot of people in the Trump world who are rightfully angry with how the RNC raised so much money when they were jointly connected and did not appropriate it right or definitely didn’t appropriate it to the efforts that they said they would, like election integrity.”

“There’s another element to this—the hidden horse race—which is the money race. The RNC and the National Republican Senatorial Committee, the National Republican Congressional Committee, if these guys can’t raise money because Donald Trump is sucking all the oxygen out of the room, they’re in a lot of trouble because their candidates are relying on their support.”

George Santos, a Republican running for Congress in New York, told The Epoch Times last week that bypassing the RNC for fundraising will send a message to the committee that they need Trump “more than they understand.”

“This is a great example of how he is a more powerful individual than the party actually is, at this juncture,” Santos said.

Governors across the United States have either ended their states’ COVID-19 mask mandate or are considering ending it soon—as well as rollbacks on capacity limits and restrictions on businesses.

In one example, Utah’s statewide mask order is scheduled to end April 10 under a law that was passed on March 5, and Gov. Spencer Cox, a Republican, told Fox News Saturday that he won’t veto it.

“We anticipate that by April 1st every adult in the state of Utah will be eligible for the vaccine,” Cox said. Utah, he said will “have about 1.5 million vaccines in the state by April 10, when that mandate goes away.”

Meanwhile, Texas, Mississippi, Iowa, Montana, and North Dakota have now ended—or soon will end—statewide face coverings amid the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus pandemic. Alaska, Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, and Tennessee never required face coverings in public.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey, a Republican, said March 4 that the state will end its mandate in about a month, saying that starting April 9 wearing face coverings will be “a matter of personal responsibility and not a government mandate.”

On March 2, Mississippi and Texas both ended their requirements for masks and allowed businesses to operate at full capacity. The move drew condemnation from President Joe Biden and other White House officials.

“Starting tomorrow, we are lifting all of our county mask mandates and businesses will be able to operate at full capacity without any state-imposed rules,” Republican Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves said in a Facebook post last week. “Our hospitalizations and case numbers have plummeted, and the vaccine is being rapidly distributed. It is time!”

And Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, also a Republican, said the state is “100 percent open.”

“Too many Texans have been sidelined from employment opportunities,” Abbott remarked. “Too many small business owners have struggled to pay their bills. This must end.”

Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont, a Democrat, also announced some CCP virus rules will be rescinded, including capacity limits that were placed on businesses and sporting events. Amusement parks, he said, can also open. But Lamont said the mask mandate implemented in Connecticut will remain in place.

In February, Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds, a Republican, lifted the mask requirement and said, “We know what we need to do and it doesn’t require a government mandate to do it,” while Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte, also a Republican, allowed the state’s mask rule to expire last month.

Arizona Republican Gov. Doug Ducey announced recently that he will implement the “next phase of business and safety protocols,” which includes removing the limits for capacity on businesses and the return of major sporting events. Ducey said that face coverings and social distancing will be required, however.

West Virginia Gov. Jim Justice, a Republican, said he would lift capacity restrictions on restaurants, bars, and other businesses. Masks will still have to be worn.

“I’m gonna continue to listen to the medical experts,” Justice said about masks. “We absolutely expect you to continue to wear your mask. You know, I’m not a fan of the masks either. But, at the same time, we know they’ve saved a lot of lives, and we know we’re too early in the game to let our guard down.”

Dassault, 69, was the eldest son of French billionaire industrialist Serge Dassault, whose group builds the Rafale war planes and owns Le Figaro newspaper.

“Olivier Dassault loved France. Captain of industry, lawmaker, local elected official, reserve commander in the air force: during his life, he never ceased to serve our country, to value its assets. His sudden death is a great loss. Thoughts on his family and loved ones,” Macron said on Twitter.

The private helicopter crashed on Sunday afternoon in Normandy, where he has a holiday home, according to a police source.

A lawmaker for the conservative Les Republicains party since 2002, Dassault was considered the 361st richest man in the world alongside his two brothers and sister, according to the 2020 Forbes rich list.

He stepped down from his role on the board of Dassault due to his political role to avoid any conflict of interest.

Olivier, seen as the favorite of founder Marcel, was once considered favored to succeed Serge at the head of the family holding, but that role went to former Dassault Aviation CEO Charles Edelstenne.

“Great sadness at the news of the sudden disappearance of Olivier Dassault,” Valerie Pecresse, a conservative politician who is president of the Paris region, said on Twitter.

“A businessman, but also a renowned photographer, he had a passion for politics in his blood, rooted in his department of Oise. My warm thoughts to his family.”

A group of Republican lawmakers called on the White House to reinstate former President Donald Trump’s national emergency at the U.S.-Mexico border.

“There is a crisis at our southern border. It is critical that our leaders recognize the severity of the circumstances and respond accordingly,” the lawmakers said in a letter to President Joe Biden, according to a release from Rep. Lance Gooden (R-Texas). “Your administration’s refusal to enforce immigration laws has encouraged countless migrants to make the treacherous journey across our border. We urge you to recognize that an immigration crisis is underway and reinstate a national emergency concerning our southern border.”

It came weeks after Biden terminated the two-year-long national emergency declaration by Trump. But the lawmakers cited a surge in migrants—including unaccompanied minors—at the border that prompted warnings from Democratic officials whose districts lie along the Southern Border.

“Following a surge of migrants crossing our border in January of this year, U.S. Customs & Border Patrol (CBP) announced that they ‘faced a growing number of individuals attempting to cross the southwest border, averaging about 3,000 arrests per day in January 2021,'” their letter also stated, as reported by the Washington Examiner. “Their latest estimates approximate that 117,000 unaccompanied children will cross our border this year. They will travel amongst human traffickers and drug smugglers to get here.”

Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas), whose district lies along the border, issued a series of warnings this week that if the federal government doesn’t take action soon, there will be a humanitarian crisis in a matter of “weeks” or “even days.”

Cuellar sounded the alarm over the past weekend, telling Fox News on Saturday that the White House has been “purposely withholding” data on migrants who are being released from custody.

“I can tell you this, those numbers of people that are being released, they’re purposely withholding that information,” Cuellar said. “They’ve been told not to withhold that information. I now know that they’re bringing people from McAllen over to Laredo, processing them in Laredo, and they’re going to release them in my community.”

He added, “I’ve seen this before, don’t let the local communities know what you’re doing where they’re starting to bring people in from the valley, process them in Laredo, release them at a bus station. And, again, I’ve seen this before in the past.”

The Epoch Times has reached out to the White House for comment.

The letter to Biden about reversing the rescinding of national emergency at the border was signed by about two dozen Republicans.

According to Gooden’s office, “Until January 20th of this year, there was a standing national emergency concerning our southern border. President Trump declared that emergency on February 15, 2019. Reversing that proclamation was one of President Joe Biden’s first actions in office. It is clear now that was a grave mistake.”

BERLIN—Swiss voters narrowly approved on Sunday a proposal to ban face coverings, both the niqabs and burqas worn by a few Muslim women in the country and the ski masks and bandannas used by protesters.

The measure will outlaw covering one’s face in public places like restaurants, sports stadiums, public transport or simply walking in the street. It foresees exceptions at religious sites and for security or health reasons, such as face masks people are wearing now to protect against COVID-19, as well as for traditional Carnival celebrations. Authorities have two years to draw up detailed legislation.

Two Swiss cantons, or states, Ticino and St. Gallen, already have similar legislation that foresees fines for transgressions. National legislation will put Switzerland in line with countries such as Belgium and France that have already enacted similar measures.

The Swiss government had opposed the measure as excessive, arguing that full-face coverings are a “marginal phenomenon.” It argued that the ban could harm tourism—most Muslim women who wear such veils in Switzerland are visitors from well-heeled Persian Gulf states, who are often drawn to Swiss lakeside cities.

Experts estimate that at most a few dozen Muslim women wear full-face coverings in the country of 8.5 million people.

Supporters of the proposal, which came to a vote five years after it was launched, argued that the full-face coverings symbolize the repression of women and said the measure is needed to uphold a basic principle that faces should be shown in a free society like Switzerland’s.

In the end, 51.2 percent of voters supported the plan. There were majorities against it in six of Switzerland’s 26 cantons—among them those that include the country’s three biggest cities, Zurich, Geneva and Basel, and the capital, Bern. SRF public television reported that voters in several popular tourist destinations including Interlaken, Lucerne and Zermatt rejected it.

Backers included the nationalist Swiss People’s Party, which is the strongest in parliament. The committee that launched the proposal is led by a lawmaker from the party, Walter Wobmann, and also initiated a ban on the construction of new minarets that voters approved in 2009.

A coalition of left-leaning parties that opposes the proposal put up signs ahead of the referendum that read: “Absurd. Useless. Islamophobic.”

Wobmann told SRF that the initiative addressed both “a symbol of a completely different system of values … extremely radical Islam” and security against “hooligans.” He said that “this has nothing to do with symbolic politics.”

Voters had their say on two other issues Sunday. They clearly rejected a proposed voluntary “e-ID” to improve the security of online transactions—an idea that ran afoul of privacy advocates, as it would have been issued by private companies—and narrowly approved a free-trade deal with Indonesia.

On a nice, warm Saturday afternoon a good crowd had gathered at Broadway Cinemas in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. We were there to watch Hellstorm, a documentary by Kyle Hunt and Tom Goodrich, illustrating the horrific and oftentimes unimaginable treatment of the German people after World War II. As well done as the film is, it is certainly not for the faint-hearted, but it is still imperative for every person of European descent to see this for it gives us a glimpse of what could happen if the Jews have their way and do successful.

The Supreme Court dismissed former President Donald Trump’s final remaining challenge to the 2020 presidential election results this morning, a lawsuit challenging the results in the state of Wisconsin.

Also on March 8, the high court declined to hear an emergency petition for mandamus brought by pro-Trump lawyer L. Lin Wood who on Dec. 30, 2020, asked the court to block the Jan. 5, 2021 runoff elections for Georgia’s two U.S. Senate seats. The races were won by Democrats who unseated two incumbent Republicans, handing control of that chamber to Democrats as President Joe Biden began his term of office.

The court, as is its custom when refusing to hear petitions, did not explain its actions March 8. No justices indicated they were dissenting from the dismissal orders.

In the case at hand, Trump v. Wisconsin Elections Commission, court file 20-883, Trump argued the commission violated the U.S. Constitution when it established rules for mail-in voting inconsistent with state law.

The commission and local election officials “implemented unauthorized, illegal absentee voting drop boxes, compelled illegal corrections to absentee ballot witness certificates by poll workers, and encouraged widespread voter misuse of ‘indefinitely confined’ status to avoid voter ID laws, all in disregard of the Legislature’s explicit command to ‘carefully regulate’ the absentee voting process,” Trump’s petition stated.

In the petition, Trump challenged the rules under the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment and Article II of the U.S. Constitution, which states that “Each State shall appoint [electors for president and vice president] in such Manner as the Legislature thereof may direct.”

The dismissal came after the Supreme Court threw out a series of legal challenges on Feb. 22 to voting processes and results in several states left over from the recent presidential election cycle, as The Epoch Times previously reported.

Those cases concerned the presidential elections held in the battleground states of Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.

White House spokesperson Jen Psaki said Texas Gov. Greg Abbott “declined” an offer of federal funds to pay for CCP virus testing for illegal immigrants, adding that the administration hopes “he’ll reconsider.”

“The governor has complained about testing at the border,” Psaki said in an interview on MSNBC on Sunday. “FEMA, DHS has worked with local authorities, has worked with local NGOs [nongovernmental organizations] to come up with a plan that would cover 100 percent of testing costs for migrants who cross the border.”

“He has declined that funding,” she said. “That is something that doesn’t help the people of Texas, and we’re certainly hopeful that he’ll reconsider.”

Federal officials have asked Texas to assist with this issue, Abbott said Thursday, but he declined, saying testing and quarantining migrants is the federal government’s job.

“Border security is strictly a federal responsibility. The federal government alone has the responsibility to test, screen, and quarantine illegal immigrants crossing our border who may have COVID,” Abbott said in a statement. “Instead of doing their job, the Biden administration suggested it did not have the sufficient resources and, remarkably, asked Texas to assist them in aiding their illegal immigration program. Texas refused.”

A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson told CNN on Friday that the department has been working with local officials in Texas to provide CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus testing and its agreement with partners called for federal funds to cover expenses related to testing, isolation, and quarantine.

“We hope that Gov. Abbott will reconsider his decision to reject DHS’s agreement with the Texan local authorities that would enable the very testing of migrant families that Gov. Abbott says he wants,” the spokesperson said.

A Texas Division of Emergency Management spokesperson told Forbes that Abbott has sent some 40,000 virus tests to four border towns since late January, to help those communities deal with an influx of people crossing the border.

It comes as President Joe Biden and Abbott have been sparring over CCP virus protocols and measures in Texas. After Abbott announced last week that he was lifting restrictions on businesses in Texas and doing away with mask mandates, Biden denounced that decision as “Neanderthal thinking.”

Abbott alleged in interviews and social media posts that Biden’s immigration policies were the real threat and accused the president of releasing migrants with the CCP virus into Texas.

“The Biden administration has been releasing immigrants in south Texas that have been exposing Texans to COVID,” Abbott, a Republican, said in a CNBC interview Thursday.

That followed a March 3 tweet in which Abbott said, “The Biden Administration is recklessly releasing hundreds of illegal immigrants who have COVID into Texas communities. The Biden Admin. must IMMEDIATELY end this callous act that exposes Texans & Americans to COVID.”

The dispute between Biden and Abbott follows reports that over 100 virus-positive illegal immigrants were released by U.S. Border Patrol since January, according to Fox News.

Meanwhile, Abbott launched a program on March 6 that will deploy state National Guard troops and personnel from other agencies to respond to the burgeoning crisis at the southern border.

“Texas supports legal immigration but will not be an accomplice to the open border policies that cause, rather than prevent, a humanitarian crisis in our state and endanger the lives of Texans,” Abbott said in a statement to media outlets on March 6.

Abbott said Operation Lone Star will deploy air, ground, marine, and tactical border security assets to prevent Mexican criminal organizations from smuggling drugs and people into Texas.
