She didn't know she would watch her parent's marriage explode just a year or two after this picture was taken.
She didn't know her dad would disappear.
She didn't know her mom would always lack compassion and empathy. That it wasn't because they were going through a rough patch.
She learned to be perfect. And if she wasn't, she learned the consequences. And when she was, it still wouldn't get her the attention she needed.
She didn't know her grandfather wasn't to be trusted. Or that her family wouldn't keep her safe.
She didn't know it would be hard to find real friends or that when she did, she'd move away from them.
She didn't know she would be so desperate for connection, that she would become friends with people who had no interest in her well being or wishes. Or how that would lead her into the path of a bullet where she'd lose eyesight in her left eye at age 15.
She didn't know how to say no. Or that she didn't need to give people whatever they wanted in order to earn affection.
She didn't know her worth and she gauged her value through other people's opinions.
She grew to become hypervigilant.
Despite it all, she recognized that she grew up in a world of dysfunction. She would do what she needed to survive it. At age 17 she filed a report on her grandfather and watched him go to prison. In her early 20s she moved over a thousand miles away from her family and everything that went with it. She took her people pleasing perfectionism and built success through it. She learned how to lead with compassion and integrity because she knew how it felt to be controlled and manipulated.
She would meet a man who saw her value and she would build a family with him. She ends up having 4 kids, a home and soul deep friendships that would be able to withstand any distance.
She has learned that she is the one who determines her value, her worth. She no longer tries to be perfect and impressive....she's real. Even if she knows some people don't know how to handle her truth. She's not for everyone and she accepts that. She wears her scars out loud because she knows what it's like to have her voice silenced. Not for sympathy....but because she knows that sometimes people just need permission. Permission to feel. Permission to heal. Permission to burn the bridges that lead to no place good for them and to rise up from the ashes of everything they've been through. To take what they've learned and use it to build a new story and outcome.
She has made this little girl so proud. She knows that if she saw her walking down the street today, she would tell her, "Hang in there. One day, it will all be worth it.". And she'll mean it.
