Snakes were a very common symbol in Irish History and stems as far back as the Tuath De Dannan who were the first Gods of Ireland.
The snake stands for wisdom and knowledge, even the Druids used it in most of their symbology, hence why St Patrick and his brethren mercenaries representing the Catholic Church had to wipe out the Druids and Paganism to prevent the knowledge from continuing to be passed down.
Actual snakes have never been found in Ireland. This whole story has been twisted and made into a very misleading celebration called St Patrick's Day.

Ah, the poor snake.
Misunderstood and vilified.
I must admit, theyβre not my favorite creatures. But I see, very clearly, that this is because I have been conditioned to think they are βyuckyβ.
If I imagine myself as a child, with no one telling me anything about a snake β no preconceived notions of what it is, or what it means, I would see it completely differently.
See with the eyes of a child, the beginnerβs mind, and we make room for the Truth.
