The Declaration of Arbroath

The Declaration of Arbroath is a letter written in 1320 by Scottish barons to Pope John XXII, asserting Scotland's independence from England and recognizing Robert the Bruce as the rightful king. It is considered a foundational document of Scottish nationalism and has been compared to the American Declaration of Independence.

The document claims the Scots descended from Israelites who crossed the Red Sea. Written by nobles under Robert the Bruce, it traces their origins from “Greater Scythia” to Scotland via Spain, 1,200 years after the Exodus (c. 250 BC).

Here is an excerpt from the document;

They journeyed from Greater Scythia by way of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Pillars of Hercules, and dwelt for a long course of time in Iberia [1] among the most savage tribes, but nowhere could they be subdued by any race, however barbarous.
Thence they came, twelve hundred years after the people of Israel crossed the Red Sea, to their home in the west where they still live today.

This is clear evidence that Scots viewed themselves as part of the Lost Ten Tribes of Israel, dispersed by Assyria (2 Kings 17:23).


Further evidence linking the Scot’s (and Celts) include;

Cultural and Linguistic

• Observance of dietary laws similar to Leviticus 11 (avoiding certain meats).

• Tribal structures and clan systems mirroring Israel’s tribal organization (Numbers 1).

• Use of tartans, likened to the “coats of many colors” (Genesis 37:3).

• The Gaelic term “Scot” is connected to “Scythian” or “Sacae,” with links to “Saxon,” derived from Isaac (Genesis 48:16). Names like “Scotia” also reflect Israelite heritage. The Book of Leinster (12th century) and other Irish/Scottish annals claim descent from Scythian or Egyptian figures like “Scota,” which are a reference to Israelite migrations via Egypt (Exodus).

The Stone of Destiny (Lia Fáil)

• The Stone of Scone, used in Scottish coronations, is said to be Jacob’s Pillow (Genesis 28:18), brought to Scotland via Egypt, Spain, and Ireland by Israelite descendants.

• Legends in the Scots Chronicles (Fordun’s Chronica Gentis Scotorum) link the stone to Gathelus and Scota, a couple with supposed Egyptian/Israelite ties. Further evidence of Israel’s migration to Scotland.

• Genesis 49:10 (“The sceptre shall not depart from Judah”) is interpreted as fulfilled in the Scottish monarchy, with the stone symbolising covenant continuity.

Early Christian Traditions in Scotland

• Early Scottish Christianity established by figures like Columba (6th century) emphasised Old Testament practices, suggests an Israelite spiritual heritage.

• Acts 2:39 (“For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off…”)

“Afar off” are the dispersed Israelites in Europe, including those in regions like Scotland, who received the gospel early (via Culdee monks).


Further works like the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle and Historia Brittonum (Nennius) describe migrations of our ancestors (Angles, Saxons, Celts) to Britain. In these works we can clearly see the Scythian and therefore, Israelite link.

Additional evidence includes scriptural prophecies (Hosea 1:10, Isaiah 43:5-6), cultural parallels (Celtic practices, linguistic links), the Stone of Destiny tradition (Genesis 28:18), and early Christian practices in Scotland (Acts 2:39). These align with the Declaration of Arbroath’s claim of Scythian/Israelite origins.
