These last few weeks I have been working on a little statistical project. I have compiled a state level panel data set between 1999-2018. I controlled for variables such as age (18-24, 25-34), unemployment and poverty rates, per capita alcohol consumption, arrest rates, and the percentage of the population which has a college degree or higher. I looked at outcome measures such as murder, assault, robbery, and homicide (homicide has a more expansive definition than murder). Despite controlling for these variables — and I also controlled for more variables than that, as I also had state and time fixed effects which control for a whole host of things — the demographics of a state (as measured by the percentage of the state which is black) consistently had a strong positive correlation with crime.

Here is the data for homicide, robbery and assault. The thing you're looking for is the coefficient next to pctblack, which just means for every one unit change in pctblack the response variable changes by whatever amount the coefficient suggests
