President Trump issued a proclamation declaring a national emergency due to threats to the U.S. supply of phosphate fertilizers

The action temporarily authorizes duty-free importation of phosphate fertilizers from Morocco for up to 8 months (or until the emergency ends, whichever comes first).

Phosphate fertilizers are essential for major U.S. crops (corn, soybeans, wheat, etc.) to maintain strong yields and ensure a stable food supply.

Global fertilizer supply chains have been disrupted by conflicts in producing regions and trade actions by major fertilizer-producing countries.

The U.S.’s largest foreign source of phosphate fertilizer has faced significant disruptions, pressuring domestic food production and farm economics.

Current U.S. domestic production is insufficient to meet demand (after accounting for exports), and the expanding domestic capacity will take time.

Morocco can currently supply phosphate fertilizers without disruption, helping diversify sources and mitigate risks to U.S. agriculture and national/economic security.
