Agencies across the federal government faced a Thursday deadline to submit plans for a large-scale firing of employees, but scant details were made public about what the White House said would be a “mass reduction” of the federal workforce.

The White House did not preview the plans, saying only that it would share their contents “once the plans are enacted.” What they contain could offer a view into how much further President Donald Trump and his Cabinet plan to alter the U.S. government, whose agencies include 2.3 million employees and serve daily functions from weather forecasting to cyberattack defense.

The Office of Personnel Management will work with the U.S. DOGE Service and the individual agencies to review each agency’s plans before reductions are made, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said. It was not immediately clear how many agencies had submitted plans ahead of the Thursday night deadline.
