Imam Khalil, author of the famous Mukhtasar Khalil in Maliki fiqh said in al-Jami.
“Do not joke with one beneath you, before he loses respect for you;
nor with one equal to you, before he grows resentful toward you;
and not with one higher status than you, before he becomes annoyed with you."

The Advice of the Scholar al-Murabit al-Hājj Written in his Own Hand
In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate.
Reported from Abdullāh b. Mas’ūd that the Prophet ﷺ said:
This world (Dunya) is [only taken as] a home by those who will have no real home [in Jannah], and it is the wealth of those who will have no real wealth, and it is gathered and collected for by those who have no real intelligence.
And a poet said:
A person's true gain is his youth,
and loss lies in wasting it through negligence.
I counsel myself and I counsel you with the counsel of Allah to the first and the last:
“Indeed, We have commanded those given the Scripture before you, as well as you, to be mindful of Allah.” (Qur'an 4:131)
And the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Frequently remember the destroyer of pleasures, death.”
There is no resting place after death except one of two abodes: either the abode of everlasting bliss or the Fire.

Beware of excessive companionship with most people of this age. For Abu Hamid al-Ghazali said in the fifth century:
“Beware of the pseudo-scholars (charlatans) of your time, for they are wolves in clothing.”
What is required of a person is spending his life learning beneficial knowledge and striving against his own soul with acting upon what he has learned.
People today claim to be scholars, but the matter is not so. The true scholar is the one who fears Allah.
al-Hasan al-Basri said when someone told him, “The jurists (Fuqaha) do not say that”:
“Have you truly seen a jurist? The jurist is the one who fears Allah.”
May Allah make me and you among those who listen to his speech and follow the best of it. Amin. And may Allah send blessings upon Sayydina Muhammad ﷺ. O Allah, forgive, have mercy, and pardon what You know.

A special thanks to two distinguished historians of Morocco in particular of the Soussi scholarly tradition from the historic town of Taroudant: Sidi Brahim Lyassini and Sidi Mohamed Sarti.
I had the pleasure of meeting both of them and received signed copies of their recently published books.
Their works explore the rich Islamic heritage of Taroudant in Sous. Which covers its scholars, major historical events, imporant battles, secrets, and the intellectual legacy.
I look forward to reading them and sharing what I learn, in sha Allah.

Seek knowledge even at an old age!
It is narrated by Salih Ibn Ahmad Ibn Hanbal that a man saw a writing slate with Ahmad Ibn Hanbal and said to him:
“O Abu Abdullah, you have reached this age, and you are the Imam of the Muslims, yet you still carry a writing slate?” Imam Ahmad responded: “With the inkwell to the grave.”
[Ibn Jawzi, Manaqib al-Imam Ahmad]
When Abdullah Ibn al-Mubarak was asked: “Until when will you continue seeking knowledge?” He replied: “Until death, if Allah wills.”

Yaqut al-Hamawi
If you had seen the young Yaqut al-Hamawi as a child, you would probably never have expected him to become one of the most important scholars in Arabic literature, geography, and history.
Yaqut was of Byzantine ancestry and was sold into slavery at a young age. His owner was a merchant who was not skilled in reading or writing, so he sent Yaqut to be educated. This gave him an ability to enter an environment of learning and eventually become a great scholar.
His most famous work, Mu'jam al-Buldan, a geographical dictionary covering cities, regions, and other places mentioned in the Arabic literary tradition. He also recorded information about their names, origins, locations, and histories.
What makes his work especially valuable is that Yaqut preserved poetry that is since been lost. Because he recorded them, later historians and researchers refer back to his work.
