Constructed in Doric order, and completed by Leo von Klenze in 1862, evokes the monumental entrance of the Propylaea for the Athenian Acropolis.

The gate was created as a memorial for the accession to the throne of Otto of Greece, a son of the principal King Ludwig I of Bavaria.

Erected in the late 14th century by Duke Louis of Orlรฉans, the chรขteau was taken down in the 17th century and was in ruins when Napoleon III decided to commission architect Eugรจne Viollet-le-Duc to rebuild it. He applied his architectural designs to create the ideal chรขteau, such as would have existed in the Middle Ages.
