A small town south of Milan in Italy has elected a transgender activist as its mayor, in a first for the country.
Tromello, which has a population of 3,700, voted in Gianmarco Negri as their new mayor on Sunday (May 26). Negri won 37.5 percent of the vote.
A 40-year-old lawyer, Negri ran under the slogan “CambiaMenti per Tromello,” which was a play on words between “Changes for Tromello” and “Changing Minds for Tromello.”
Negri beat his far-right opponent, Renato Cappa, in the four-way race. Cappa, a candidate for the League, Italy’s right-wing party, came second with 26 percent of the vote.

An exam board has been accused of “sowing scientific confusion” after misusing the term “gender” in one of its biology exams.
Edexcel asked students taking a GCSE paper last month to identify the “gender” shown by a set of chromosomes, then told them to show how “gender is inherited” from parents.
This has provoked a row with scientists, feminists and experts, who say the correct term is “sex” — and that the difference between the two is integral to science.
“Sex” refers to biological differences between males and females including genetics, while “gender” refers to socially constructed roles that men and women are expected to play.
“About 200 years of feminism has been trying to untie the link between sex and gender, arguing that the former doesn’t and shouldn’t dictate the latter,” said Professor Cordelia Fine, the psychologist and author of Delusions of Gender. “Using the terms interchangeably blurs importantly distinct concepts, and we need both — scientifically and socially.”
Gina Rippon, professor of cognitive neuroimaging at the Aston Brain Centre in Birmingham and author of The Gendered Brain, added: “This is sowing scientific confusion.”
A complaint was lodged with the exam board by the campaign group Fair Play for Women. Dr Nicola Williams, its director and a scientist in human biology, said: “When children are bombarded with unscientific ideas like ‘pink’ and ‘blue’ brains, it is crucial that basic science is taught correctly. Our sex, not gender, is written in our genes and can never be changed.”
Edexcel, owned by the publisher Pearson, said: “We have consulted our senior examiners and can confirm the word was changed to ‘gender’. . . to support students in understanding the question better.”
