Guardian journalist and notorious middle-class eco-warrior George Monbiot here says that, in order to save the planet, we literally need to get rid of all animal farming, and reduce other farming to a minimum by switching to "precision fermentation".

Monbiot strikes me as a do-gooder, a genuinely self-righteous and morals-obsessed person who wants to make the world a better place and probably really believes the stuff he's saying - at least on one level. At another level, I think he knows it is not true and the planet is not really in danger; if somebody believed that at every level, they would be up the wall with fear and terror - and George Monbiot isn't. In fact, nobody is. Nobody really believes this (except small children who have been terrorised with propaganda).

It was similar with covid, and it has always been this way with climate change. People want to believe in the danger, because they enjoy the sense of urgency and the chance it gives them to "save the world"... but it's clear that they don't really believe in the danger, because they are simply not very scared.

It is all, as they say, "performative".
