There exists an ancient form of sheep counting which (instead of going 1,2,3,4,5 in the usual fashion) goes yan, tan, tethera, pethera, pimp. These words are taken from the Brythonic languages (such as Cumbric and Welsh) which were once the spoken language all across Great Britain. Upon counting twenty (or jiggot) sheep, a shepherd would place a stone in his pocket to represent the lot of 20 which he had counted and begin the yan tan tethera process all over again until all his flock had been accounted for. This was common practise for shepherds in England, Wales, and Lowland Scotland as late as the nineteenth century and regional vartions on the numbers existed (for example the Lancashire "jiggot" becomes "giggot" once across the border in Scotland, and "jigif" if taken to South West England). Sadly however, modern shepherding techniques have led to this ancient practise being all but lost to modern Britain, so next time you're out in the countryside have a go at counting the sheep. The old fashioned way.

There was a broadsheet or magazine (perhaps Economist) article a couple of years back on how the Chinese CCP believe every ethnically Chinese person has a blood obligation to the motherland and that they actively target foreign-based Chinese people in high level roles for political / technical espionage or influence. Yet China is near the top for several categories of visa to Britain (high value, skilled, investor etc.) There was a phrase used to describe this belief, I wish I could find the article.
