An admin: My family originally came from the East End of London. I can tell you that there was pretty much no racially mixed (black/white) couples during the 1940's and for much later. Even in the 1960's it was frowned on . And if it was suspected by looking at children from various liaisons the disparaging comment would be uttered " I wonder if they have a touch of the tar brush" That is how it was.

The legal judgement was the correct one. What is disturbing is that the man was 'reported by a colleague' in the first place and that the London Ambulance Service took the decision that they did to effectively 'make an example and punish him' for expressing the opinions that he did.
