The so-called “citizens wage” unemployment benefit - approximately 550 euros a month for the poorest - is being phased out by the Brothers of Italy party led by Giorgia Meloni because they say there are plenty of jobs to go around.
Unemployment is at its lowest since 2009, ISTAT figures show, at 7.4%, and is still declining.
The benefit, which has cost the nation 30 billion since it was introduced four years ago, has not “abolished poverty or helped people find work,” Tommaso Foti MP said.
159,000 families were last week informed by SMS that the benefit had been cut, drawing fury from opposition parties who accused Meloni of setting off a “bomb” on society.
