Over $50 Million in Crypto Donations Pour Into Ukraine Following Russian Invasion

More than $50 million worth of cryptocurrency — primarily Bitcoin and Ethereum — has been donated in support of Ukraine’s resistance to Russia’s invasion over the last few days.

The official Twitter account of the Ukrainian government shared two cryptocurrency wallet addresses on Saturday to receive donations of Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Tether. According to research from blockchain analytics firm Elliptic, those wallets have attracted $54.7 million worth of crypto so far.

The prices of Bitcoin and Ethereum plunged Wednesday night after news that Russia had invaded Ukraine. Bitcoin dropped back below $35,000, and Ethereum dropped below $2,400 — though both had risen by Friday afternoon. As of Monday morning, Bitcoin was back over $40,000 and Ethereum was near $2,800.
Bitcoin Falls 5% as Nuclear Plant in Ukraine Attacked

Stock markets in Asia had fallen substantially as the news emerged, prompting Bitcoin to do the same. This may indicate the decoupling between crypto and equities has been short-lived.

Bitcoin plunged 5% in the early hours of Friday morning following a dramatic development in the Ukraine invasion.

The world's biggest cryptocurrency sank to lows of $41,000 after Europe's largest nuclear power plant, which is based in Ukraine, came under heavy shelling from Russian forces.

This subsequently led to a fire in a training building, and sparked fears that one of the site's nuclear reactors was damaged.

Although no increase in radiation levels has been detected, and the U.S. has confirmed that the reactors are now being shut down, Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelenskyy warned a catastrophe at the power station could lead to "the death of Europe."

"If it blows up, it will be 10 times larger than Chernobyl."

Visa, Mastercard Join PayPal in Suspending Russian Operations

Visa, Mastercard and PayPal are all suspending operations in Russia, the companies announced on March 5, citing the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Visa will begin working to discontinue transactions in Russia but it will take a few days, according to a press statement. Mastercard said it would suspend all its network services in Russia, which sent military forces into Ukraine at the end of February."Once complete, all transactions initiated with Visa cards issued in Russia will no longer work outside the country and any Visa cards issued by financial institutions outside of Russia will no longer work within the Russian Federation," said Visa's statement, which was attributed to global communications vice president Andy Gerlt

The world's biggest cryptocurrency Bitcoin is down around 17% in 2022

In cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin price today plunged below the $39,000 level after remaining volatile in the past few sessions. The world's most popular and largest cryptocurrency was trading over 3% lower at $38,315. The digital token is down about 17% in 2022 (year-to-date or YTD) so far. However, it is about 30% far away from its record high of near $69,000 it had hit in November last year.

Meanwhile, the global cryptocurrency market capitalisation remained below the $2 trillion mark, as it was down over 4% in the last 24 hours at $1.79 trillion, as per CoinGecko.

Ether, the coin linked to the ethereum blockchain and the second-largest cryptocurrency in terms of market capitalization, also declined over 4% to $2,545. On the other hand, dogecoin price also tanked 4% at $0.12 whereas Shiba Inu plummeted more than 5% to $0.000023.
Binance Launches Fiat-to-Crypto Payments Platform

Binance has announced that it is launching its own fiat-to-crypto payments platform that is designed to "connect businesses, merchants and millions of users to the world of crypto and blockchain."

The new service — known as Bifinity — aims to help companies get "crypto ready," putting them in a position where they will be able to accept digital assets as a payment method.

More than 50 cryptocurrencies are being supported by this new payments provider — alongside major, more traditional networks offered by the likes of Visa and Mastercard. Bifinity also promises to offer low-cost payment processing for merchants and a "top-tier" KYC onboarding process.
Limiting Proof-of-Work Crypto Back on the Table as EU Parliament Prepares Virtual Currencies Vote

The latest draft of the European Union's (EU) proposed legislative framework for governing virtual currencies, Markets in Crypto Assets (MiCA), still contains a provision that could limit the use of proof-of-work cryptocurrencies.

Proof-of-work is the energy-intensive consensus mechanism that underlies popular cryptocurrencies like bitcoin and ether. The computing process has come under heavy scrutiny from lawmakers in the EU over energy concerns.

A previous draft of the MiCA framework contained a strongly worded provision that proposed a prohibition of crypto services that rely on environmentally unsustainable consensus mechanisms starting in January 2025. But the provision was later scrapped following industry backlash.
