Over $50 Million in Crypto Donations Pour Into Ukraine Following Russian Invasion

More than $50 million worth of cryptocurrency — primarily Bitcoin and Ethereum — has been donated in support of Ukraine’s resistance to Russia’s invasion over the last few days.

The official Twitter account of the Ukrainian government shared two cryptocurrency wallet addresses on Saturday to receive donations of Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Tether. According to research from blockchain analytics firm Elliptic, those wallets have attracted $54.7 million worth of crypto so far.

The prices of Bitcoin and Ethereum plunged Wednesday night after news that Russia had invaded Ukraine. Bitcoin dropped back below $35,000, and Ethereum dropped below $2,400 — though both had risen by Friday afternoon. As of Monday morning, Bitcoin was back over $40,000 and Ethereum was near $2,800.
Bitcoin Falls 5% as Nuclear Plant in Ukraine Attacked

Stock markets in Asia had fallen substantially as the news emerged, prompting Bitcoin to do the same. This may indicate the decoupling between crypto and equities has been short-lived.

Bitcoin plunged 5% in the early hours of Friday morning following a dramatic development in the Ukraine invasion.

The world's biggest cryptocurrency sank to lows of $41,000 after Europe's largest nuclear power plant, which is based in Ukraine, came under heavy shelling from Russian forces.

This subsequently led to a fire in a training building, and sparked fears that one of the site's nuclear reactors was damaged.

Although no increase in radiation levels has been detected, and the U.S. has confirmed that the reactors are now being shut down, Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelenskyy warned a catastrophe at the power station could lead to "the death of Europe."

"If it blows up, it will be 10 times larger than Chernobyl."

Binance Launches Fiat-to-Crypto Payments Platform

Binance has announced that it is launching its own fiat-to-crypto payments platform that is designed to "connect businesses, merchants and millions of users to the world of crypto and blockchain."

The new service — known as Bifinity — aims to help companies get "crypto ready," putting them in a position where they will be able to accept digital assets as a payment method.

More than 50 cryptocurrencies are being supported by this new payments provider — alongside major, more traditional networks offered by the likes of Visa and Mastercard. Bifinity also promises to offer low-cost payment processing for merchants and a "top-tier" KYC onboarding process.
