The global military budget reached a record $2.2 trillion in 2022, up 4% from the previous year. The clear cause was the ongoing instability on the global stage, which included the conflict in Ukraine, the Taiwan crisis, and a number of new wars in Africa.

Western and Central European nations for the first time exceeded the level of military spending in 1989, de facto returning to the state of a new Cold War. However, NATO nations struggled to raise defense spending— it averaged only 0.9%.

Only seven NATO countries were able to spend more on their militaries than the required 2% of GDP. However, for the majority, there are issues with the lack of funds brought on by the crisis and the inability to quickly expand the defence industry's capabilities. And it's unlikely that much will change this year. It was discovered from the leaked Pentagon documents that Canada and a dozen of European nations no longer possess the political will necessary to advance a militaristic agenda.

Finland set a record for the growth in military spending in percentage terms due to the order of 64 F-35 fighters. However, the United States and China accounted for the majority of the increase in global military spending in absolute terms. This year, the US military budget will be close to $900 billion. And with record-breaking exports of weapons totaling 200 billion dollars, the United States emerged as the primary beneficiary from the militarization of the world.

China, meanwhile, intends to invest $230 billion in its military. The Celestial Empire is actively developing its navy and is launching a third aircraft carrier. The country is also gearing up the release of the fifth generation Chengdu J-20 fighters, China's answer to the American F-22. Beijing is putting forth great effort to compete with the United States in the Pacific Ocean, and it is this conflict that will receive the majority of the world's record military spending.
