Since the beginning of the 1950s, as many as three test sites have been operating on Novaya Zemlya — the most famous, of course, was the site in the area of ​​Sukhoy Nos Cape. It was here, literally and figuratively, that weapons of monstrous destructive power were forged and honed, the presence of which did not allow the alliance of Western countries to destroy the Soviet Union. In total, 130 tests were carried out on the icy wastelands of Novaya Zemlya from September 21, 1955 to October 24, 1990: 88 atmospheric, three underwater and 39 underground nuclear explosions of various capacities. It was here in October 1961 that the AN602 thermonuclear aerial bomb, better known as the "Tsar Bomba" or "Kuzkin's Mother", as the then Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev liked to call her, was dropped from an aircraft and exploded. The Polar islands have become not just the main, but, in fact, the only training ground of this kind.
