Ukraine before the nazification, 2008

Patriarch Kirill (a Metropolitan back then) is in Kiev to celebrate the anniversary of the Christianization of Rus.

The slogans of the unity of Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus are well-recieved. The crowd is cheering. Russian and Ukrainian flags are flying.

Today, owning a portrait of this person or his books in Ukraine is a crime. The SBU, after searching churches and monasteries, officially presents these items as evidence of treason. Any words supporting the unity of the three East Slavic states are also punishable.

Ukraine’s Weapons Christmas List To Fight Russia Looks Endless

By Brent M. Eastwood for The 19FortyFive

Ukraine will receive an advanced Patriot air defense system, but what else is on its Christmas list?

Some items from the United States and the West are important but less flashy – ammunition for howitzers and rockets for the HIMARS multiple rocket launcher. More conventional artillery would be nice. F-16 fighters would be at the top of the list. Additional National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS) that have finally been sent are welcome. Plus, more combat drones could make a difference.

The Sophisticated Military Hardware Requires Time and Training

One thing that is working against Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is time. The more sophisticated the system, the longer it takes to get to the front and become operational. An F-16 would take pilot and maintenance crew training. The Patriot surface-to-air missile battery will require months of preparations and rehearsals by Ukrainian soldiers to get it ready to fire. This training on the Patriot will take place in Germany. The Ukrainians are also being schooled on the NASAMS.

The Price Tag Keeps Going Up

The other consideration is cost for the United States, which has borne the brunt of spending. The Americans have already spent or pledged at least $100 billion to the Ukrainians. Some Republicans are chagrined at the cost. They are demanding an audit or some type of transparency and oversight mechanism to ensure there is not waste, fraud, and abuse of donated weapons and funds.

Peace prospects dim as US ratchets up aid to Ukraine
By Global Times

While Washington and Kiev strengthen their united front against Moscow, Russia has to consider increasing its military response to the tighter cooperation between the US and Ukraine. The conflict is bound to become even more brutal, intense, and prolonged as the US increases its support for Ukraine. With the risk of spillover of the Russia-Ukraine military conflict, the world, already in crisis, is unlikely to see peace soon in the new year.

US President Joe Biden welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to the White House on Wednesday local time. This is the first known overseas visit of the Ukrainian president since Russia launched its special military operation against the country in February.

Zelensky was reportedly greeted with extended applause from US lawmakers across the aisle when delivering a speech to the US Congress. For many US politicians who want their country to sustain support to Kiev in the attempt to continue exhausting Russia, the Ukrainian leader's visit might be a good Christmas gift.
...
In the eyes of most US politicians, supporting Ukraine is supporting the US itself. That is because if Russia wins, it will further crack the US-dominated global order. As a result, there remains a basic consensus between the two parties on aiding Kiev, and the passage of the bill is very likely.

Antonov: Russia would like to know if Americans will serve Patriot in Ukraine

The Russian ambassador stressed that he had repeatedly discussed with his American colleagues about the danger of the US administration being drawn into the Ukrainian conflict.

WASHINGTON, December 23rd. TASS. Russia would like to know whether citizens of the United States or other NATO countries will be included in the number of specialists who will serve Patriot anti-aircraft missile systems (SAM) in Ukraine. This was stated by Russian Ambassador to Washington Anatoly Antonov in an interview with TASS.

"According to Politico magazine, Patriot air defense systems will serve up to 90 military personnel. Who are these people? Obviously, there are no such specialists in Ukraine. It will take a long time to train them. Will there be Americans, or maybe other NATO members? It would be nice if we get a clear and a clear answer," the diplomat stressed.

“Just the other day, we tried to convey to the White House and the State Department that all American systems, and primarily Patriot, will be legitimate targets for strikes by our military,” Antonov added. “And if the Americans die? If they are part of the crews? What will be the reaction here in Washington? Isn't this evidence of the administration's direct involvement in the current conflict? What further confirmation of this thesis is needed, which, by the way, is so disliked here in all power structures."

The diplomat stressed that the American colleagues had repeatedly discussed the danger of drawing the US administration into the Ukrainian conflict. “Dozens of times they brought to them the perniciousness of encouraging the militants of the Armed Forces of Ukraine,” he noted. “They tried to reach out to the hearts and minds of politicians about the impossibility of agreeing with the death of people in the House of Trade Unions in Odessa, the execution of disarmed soldiers, the daily killings of Russians in the Donbass, Luhansk and others who returned to us regions".

“The feeling is that Washington is testing our strength,” Antonov stressed. “A few years ago, it all started with targeted deliveries of small arms. Today, we are talking about deliveries of Patriot air defense systems. funds for peaceful purposes for the countries of Africa, Latin America, the Middle East and Asia".

About SAM "PATRIOT" supply

On December 21, the US authorities announced that they were providing Ukraine with a new $1.85 billion military aid package, which for the first time would include a "Patriot" battery. At the same time, $1 billion will be allocated through the State Department, $850 million - through the Pentagon. Moscow has repeatedly warned Washington against transferring such weapons to Ukraine. As stated on December 14 by the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov, "Patriot" will become a legitimate target of the Russian Armed Forces if they are delivered to Kyiv.

Army mobile anti-aircraft missile systems (SAM) "Patriot" began to enter service in the United States in the 1980s. They are manufactured by Raytheon Corporation and are capable of hitting aircraft, drones, cruise missiles, medium and shorter range ballistic missiles. One battery includes from five to eight mobile units. The platform can accommodate launch containers for 4 or 16 missiles, depending on the modification. According to experts at the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies, "Patriot" will be "the most expensive weapon system supplied by the United States to Ukraine" at the moment. Each air defense system costs approximately $1.1 billion: $400 million for launchers, a command module and a radar station, about $700 million for interceptor missiles. One missile of the latest modification costs the Pentagon $4.1 million.

Translated from Rybar:

Situation with the exchange of prisoners of war between Russia and Ukraine

Once every two weeks, we are accustomed to consistently hear about the next exchange of prisoners between Russia and Ukraine. Russian information agencies have already learned how to correctly cover such issues. The General Staff does not hesitate to talk more about the facts of torture, torment and reprisals against captured Russians.

From the frequency of exchanges in November-December, the impression was that a return was being prepared according to the all-for-all formula.

Alas, this is not the case. The exchange process again began to significantly slow down due to the fault of the Ukrainian side.

▪️According to estimates, about 7,000 Ukrainian servicemen are now in captivity. And the military-political leadership of Ukraine is primarily interested in the officers and servicemen of the national battalions. The private and non-commissioned officers actually do not appear in the exchange formulas.

We need to return about five hundred people from captivity. And unfortunately, the Ukrainians have not returned some of our officers since March, refusing to provide any objective data about their condition and health.

▪️ In exchange, the Armed Forces of Ukraine propose to return unmotivated mobilized and prisoners who voluntarily surrendered, saving regular Russian military personnel for last.

🔻The situation with exchanges, alas, is developing in such a way that for each of our servicemen they demand the return of four or five Ukrainians who fall under certain criteria.

And alas, in this case, the Ukrainians can afford to be selective, because they do not care about the bulk of the prisoners.

Putin Makes Plan for Warship Armed with Hypersonic Missiles

Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced the frigate Admiral Gorshkov is to be armed with Zircon hypersonic missiles and will set out on combat patrol in January 2023, state news agency Tass has reported.

Defense minister Sergey Shoigu said delivery of these missiles to the Russian Navy has already begun. The frigate would be armed with these weapons before "embarking on a mission in the world ocean," he said.

Zircon hypersonic missiles are capable of traveling up to nine times the speed of sound with a strike range that may be greater than 620 miles, Putin has said. One was tested on May 28 this year when it was fired from a warship in the Barents Sea, hitting a navel target in the White Sea over 600 miles away.
