Such transformers are not produced in Ukraine. I myself once built a factory. I know how much networks cost — design, manufacture, order, installation. Very long and expensive. That's why the strikes go to substations.

— We beat, the light goes out, and after a day or a week everything is in order: the television is working, the heat is supplied. All is repaired.

— Thanks to Ukrainian propaganda for the good picture. We (and Ukrainians too) see only a small part of what is happening in the Ukrainian energy sector. Light in houses is not the main thing. Most of the energy goes to industrial facilities. And they suffer. And it's getting harder and harder to repair. We know this in civilian life: a transformer broke down, spare lines were turned on, electricians arrived, inserted new parts — and that's it. But today these stocks are less and less. And they themselves say that a few more blows — and the system will fall. There will be no unified energy system, only islands throughout Ukraine will remain, which will supply electricity sporadically.

— No light — everything will stop?

— I remember it well from Lugansk, Donetsk, Crimea. Our civilization is based on electricity. It will not be - we are falling into the stone age. Mobile communications, metro, sewerage, heating do not work (pumps must pump water), there is no water, business stops, there is nowhere to work, get paid.

— Will the trains stop? And the supply of weapons from the West?

— Since the blessed Soviet times, we have left a huge number of diesel locomotives that were in reserve at the junction stations. They were kept especially in case of war. So, alas, they will provide the minimum cargo flow.

"HOW LONG DO YOU WAIT?!"
— What do people think? What are their moods?

— Of course, life without light and without work does not inspire optimism. Yes, propaganda assures that, on the contrary, this will strengthen the resolve of Ukrainians and mobilize them. This is not true. My Ukrainian friends perceive all this as a catastrophe that is looming, and it is not clear when there will be a way out and an outcome.

— Why then did many decide to stay in Ukraine?

— Firstly, people cannot leave. Secondly, there is still hope. Look at the authorities — they don't say there will be a catastrophe. They say that victory is coming soon. Many believe and wait.

— And there are those who are waiting for Russians to come?

— I have a lot of appeals: “Stop shelling us, it’s better to come quickly, occupy the territory. How long do you have to wait?

— Are there really many?

— I will not say that the majority, but they are. That's for sure.

— And what do people in Ukraine think about now? About politics or how to keep warm?

— When the lights go out, people begin to be interested in the simplest everyday things: how to eat, where to charge the phone, when to get water. Turning off the heating in the cities is yet to come. It will be a total disaster. But now people pay less attention to front-line reports. They don't watch politics on TV. And the TV itself rarely works. I have no doubt that Zelenskiy's office is worried about this.

FRONT IN HIBERNATION
— What to expect in the winter on the fronts?

— I can only guess. But, apparently, the strategy is to strengthen the defences in Zaporozhye with the Luhansk region and move the front line away from Donetsk so that there are no shelling of the city. Ideally — to reach Slavyansk and unblock the water supply to Donetsk. The water canal is blocked by Ukraine exactly there.

— That is, you do not expect active movement?

“So far, there’s nothing to be seen to indicate that. It is clear that our Ministry of Defence does not lay out plans, but we are used to the fact that foreign intelligence services are closely monitoring the entire theatre of operations and leaking data on the movements of our troops to the press. But for now, they are silent.

THE WEST TAKES IT EASY
— The West has completely taken over Ukraine. Gives weapons, money. Will it have enough supplies and patience to feed Ukraine this winter?

— We have heard statements that "the West is getting tired of Ukraine." But there is an important factor. From the point of view of the West, the conflict with Russia in Ukraine is actually a confrontation between Russians and Russians. Ideally — for Russian money. They themselves spend a meagre amount on this compared to Afghanistan, the war in which, according to various estimates, cost from a trillion to three trillion dollars. The West has spent so far only 100 billion on Ukraine.

— And what does “for Russian money” mean?

— The West has arrested half of Russia's gold and foreign exchange reserves. This is 300 billion dollars. And he is preparing to confiscate this money. Plus, the assets of Russian corporations and businessmen have been arrested for another 200 billion. Compare — the European Union has allocated only 18 billion to Ukraine so far. This is even less than the interest accrues on the capital arrested from us. For the West, such a conflict in Ukraine is beneficial.

— Do we have the ability to prevent the confiscation of our reserves?

— For example, in response, we have not yet arrested anything from the West on our territory. On the contrary, we paid $250 billion in loans alone this year. This is very big money. Perhaps this attitude can be reconsidered.

DRY RESIDUE
“They will feel what they themselves did with the Donbass”

— Yes, Ukraine will be able to survive the winter, — sums up Oleg Tsarev. — Albeit without many benefits of civilization. Whoever says no, should look at the territory of Donbass. There are now almost the same problems with electricity, water, heating. Ukraine hits the transformers and other infrastructure of the cities of the DPR and LPR in the same way.
