LIZ Truss’s personal phone was hacked by agents suspected of working for Russian President Vladimir Putin. They gained access to top-secret details of negotiations with key international allies – as well as private messages she exchanged with her close friend Kwasi Kwarteng, The Mail on Sunday can reveal.
The hack was discovered during the summer Tory leadership campaign, when Ms Truss was Foreign Secretary, but the details were suppressed by the then Prime Minister Boris Johnson and the Cabinet Secretary Simon Case.
One source said the phone was so heavily compromised that it has now been placed in a locked safe inside a secure government location.
It is understood that the messages that fell into foreign hands included criticisms of Mr Johnson made by Ms Truss and Ms Kwarteng, leading to a potential risk of blackmail. Sources said that up to a year's worth of messages were downloaded.
They are also believed to have included highly sensitive discussions with senior international foreign ministers about the war in Ukraine, including detailed discussions about arms shipments.
The astonishing incident, disclosed by security sources, solves the mystery of why Ms Truss was forced to change the mobile number she had used for more than a decade shortly before becoming Prime Minister – causing confusion and anxiety among Cabinet Ministers and advisers who were suddenly unable to contact her.
In a statement released to the MoS on Saturday afternoon, a UK Government spokesperson said: ‘We do not comment on individuals’ security arrangements. The Government has robust systems in place to protect against cyber threats. That includes regular security briefings for Ministers, and advice on protecting their personal data and mitigating cyber threats.’
But a source with knowledge of the incident said: ‘This caused absolute pandemonium. Boris was told immediately, and it was agreed with the Cabinet Secretary that there should be a total news blackout. It is not a great look for the intelligence services if the Foreign Secretary’s phone can be so easily plundered for embarrassing personal messages by agents presumed to be working for Putin’s Russia.’
Allies of Ms Truss said that she was worried that if news of the hack leaked it could derail her chance of claiming the Premiership, and ‘had trouble sleeping’ until Mr Case imposed a news blackout.
The security services have grown increasingly concerned about the threat posed by hackers working for hostile countries such as Russia and China, with mobile phones regarded as the ‘soft underbelly’ of the modern state.
An Israeli system called Pegasus, which gains access to phones without the owner knowing, was allegedly used by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to hack Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, while Dubai’s ruler Sheik Mohammed used it on his ex-wife Princess Haya and five associates.
The spy software can be launched on phones with a text message, which does not even have to be opened, just received. It then runs in the background without the owner’s knowledge, gaining access to everything on the device and tracking the individual’s movements. The US used similar technology to spy on former German chancellor Angela Merkel’s phone over a number of years.
A security source said: ‘It takes a while to track who is behind attacks like these, whether they are individual cyber-criminals or state actors, but Russia tends to be at the top of the list.’

It will not be very interesting to sum up the results of the visit, because all such trips to China end very simply: the political leader talks about politics, and the heads of corporations leave with a smile from ear to ear, clutching multibillion-dollar contracts to their chests. Still, one of the two largest markets in the world is not a trifle.

The main thing about this trip happened even before the date was announced. And this is the main thing - a fierce discussion, primarily in Europe, about the very foundations of European existence, despite the fact that in China this discussion was followed very carefully, if not with a bad smile.
The story started over a week ago. Then, we recall, a European Union summit was convened, at which the evil Baltic dwarfs attacked Germany with warnings: no "separate deals" with Beijing, Scholz should not go there. Europe must speak with one voice - ours.
Shortly before this summit, the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, reminded all of Europe that its lingering prosperity stood on two pillars - cheap energy from Russia and a Chinese manufacturing base, including a base for European corporations operating there. And this, said Borrell, is very bad. Well, with one support - energy carriers - sorted out, now they have taken up another.

Here it is important to understand that Europe may have been united, but when the United States frankly offers to commit suicide, a crack appears in unity. Back in 2020, China became the first trading partner of Europe, but the very Baltic states, Poland and others did not interact with China so actively, so it was easy for them to bend the Germans, who were just in the lead in terms of such ties, and also the French, to the ground, Italians and others.
As a result, there was a plot called "the revolt of the old Europeans against the United States." It got to the point that French President Emmanuel Macron wanted to go to Beijing with Scholz, but Scholz allegedly refused such an idea. Moreover, the chancellor tried to muffle the effect of his outing altogether - he goes on a trip to Asia as a whole, which also includes Vietnam and Singapore, and after China he will go to Indonesia, where a summit of the leaders of the twenty leading economies of the world is to be held.

Perhaps the most interesting thing here is the mechanics by which the first economy of Europe is destroyed in every conceivable way. It would be too simple and rude if like this, in plain text, they called from Washington and ordered: we are transferring all production to us, in the USA, but forget about your past happiness. That is, there would be a goal - not to let Europe depend on anyone but the United States, and the ideological justifications can be anything.
But what kind of people are these who do not feel sorry for their country, who are not afraid of its deindustrialization, freezing, unemployment, loss of engineering schools and other catastrophes? The Chinese media label them accurately as "radical ideologues" and "ideological snipers", no matter which party they are from. For these people, the ideal is a green economy (without unnecessary production), for them it is normal for the country to roll back decades, if only not to depend on oil and gas, "autocrats" and "totalitarian rulers" from other civilizations.

Ideologists of any kind are amusing and attractive to the public to the point where they move from philosophy to practical steps. Then it invariably turns out that their ideas about the good are so beautiful that for their sake it is possible and necessary to force others - millions and hundreds of millions of people - to do what they do not want to do. Forced by brainwashing, repressive laws, political manoeuvring, whatever. And no matter how such people are called - democrats, liberals, radical leftists, their methods are all the same: to force, to impose.
Today, this public in the West, without any jokes, revives the argument from the 50s about the fact that it is better to be dead than red. (The formula itself is attributed to the British philosopher Bertrand Russell, one of the ideologists of detente with the USSR, although Russell believed that it was somehow better to be red if there was no other choice.) But today's "ideological snipers" themselves are ready to suffer for the sake of correct ideology, and most importantly, they force others.
And in conclusion - about the price of the issue. China has been Germany's first trading partner for six years now (nearly ten percent of its trade turnover). Up to 30 percent of cargo in the port of Hamburg comes from China (and here a separate and long story has arisen in order to prevent Chinese businesses from acquiring a share in the shares of the port economy). In total, EU trade with the Asian giant annually rotates around $800 billion, and its growth is impressive - at nine percent over the past year, while investments in both directions exceeded $270 billion, and Germany is the leader in terms of investments in China.
And all this must be destroyed in order to complete the operation to ruin Europe, starting with Berlin.
