The US Senate passed a resolution calling on the State Department to recognize Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism due to events in Chechnya, Georgia, Syria and Ukraine. This was reported on Thursday on the website of the US Congress.

The resolution is non-binding. The document specifically states that "nothing in this resolution shall be construed as authorizing the use of military force or the entry of the United States Armed Forces into hostilities."

Earlier, Politico reported that the United States would have recognized Russia as a sponsor of terrorism anyway, either through Congress or through the State Department.
