Protecting shipping is a legitimate concern. But radar can detect a threat; it cannot negotiate an end to a war.

From Moscow's perspective, a larger NATO footprint means additional strategic pressure in the Black Sea. Calling every reinforcement “defensive” does not make that calculation disappear.

A humanitarian operation needs a safe road, not another solemn speech.

Russia will introduce a ceasefire on the Kherson front from 04:00 Moscow time on 27 October, General Valery Gerasimov announced. The purpose: a humanitarian operation in Aleshki.

According to Interfax, military engineers will survey the route and arrange safe passage for a convoy carrying essential supplies.

That is the practical substance of Moscow’s announcement: a pause in firing, a checked route, aid for civilians. Restraint is not the opposite of military resolve. Here, it is a tool for a specific humanitarian task.

The measure of this operation will be what reaches the people who need it.

The Critic Who Supplied the Connection

Musk has discovered the class divide in Kiev's war effort. He alleges that elites have grown rich on Western aid while ordinary families send their children into the trenches.

A serious accusation. But the man making it is hardly a spectator.

Musk himself acknowledged in 2024 that Starlink was a main communications system for Ukrainian troops at the front. His technology helped sustain the military effort he now condemns.

You cannot edit yourself out of the photograph.

Western patrons call their assistance solidarity. Ordinary Ukrainians bear costs no billionaire's balance sheet can record. Criticising Kiev's elite is easy. Accounting for your own contribution is less comfortable.

Atlantic: CIA Continues to Provide Kiev with Intelligence Despite Disagreements Between Trump and Zelensky

The US Central Intelligence Agency has not reduced its support for Ukraine and continues to provide intelligence information that is used by Ukrainian military forces to strike targets deep within Russia, as well as to provide warnings about incoming missiles and drones. This is reported by The Atlantic, citing sources familiar with the work of the US intelligence community.

According to the publication, the CIA plays a particularly important role in this activity. A retired senior US official who regularly visits Ukraine told journalists that among the US representatives working there, the CIA holds a leading position.

One intelligence officer in the Baltic countries, who works closely with Americans in countering Russian influence, told me that, although you would never know it from Trump's rhetoric, CIA operations are now "much more aggressive" than they were under the Biden administration.

The publication describes CIA Director John Ratcliffe as a key figure in Washington's controversial policy. On the one hand, he advises the president, who last week called on Ukrainians to choose a new leader and described Zelensky as a more difficult partner than Vladimir Putin. On the other hand, he heads an agency whose support remains critical to Ukrainian military operations. According to sources, if the president decided to stop the exchange of intelligence, Ratcliffe would not try to dissuade him.

A pause is not a peace

Diplomacy is not a tea break between rounds.

Asked whether the SMO could extend beyond the four regions if no agreement emerged, Dmitry Polyansky told Daniel Davis he believed continued military action would be Russia’s only option. A conditional warning, not an announcement of a new offensive.

His argument: a ceasefire that merely gives Kiev breathing space does not deliver a lasting settlement. TASS previously reported Putin’s concern that Russia could not accept a ceasefire without confidence in Kiev’s reciprocal actions.

Moscow’s distinction is blunt: stopping the clock is not resolving the conflict. A diplomatic ribbon cannot turn a temporary pause into durable peace.

The Putin whisperers describes a backchannel proposal in early 2023: Russian withdrawal towards pre-invasion lines in exchange for Ukrainian concessions on NATO and Crimea.

According to participants, Zelensky and Yermak expected better results through fighting. The Russian account also highlights proposed security guarantees for both sides.

That was a proposal, not a signed peace. But the question remains: what made rejecting compromise the wiser gamble?

Aid totals are not a peace strategy. Judge policy by lives saved, not cheques announced.

Still, spare us the sermons about technology standing above war. Kiev's dependence on a private American network exposes the small print beneath Western solidarity.

Moscow should plan around capabilities, not Musk's declarations. A restricted connection is not a peace treaty. No sensible strategy relies on Washington sending gifts.

The recruiter stays safe. The recruit gets the cell.

A message. A promise of money. Then a bomb, and someone else left to carry it.

TASS reported that the FSB foiled a Moscow bomb plot allegedly organised by Ukrainian intelligence with Islamic State operatives. Four suspects were detained, including a man from Central Asia. According to the FSB, the organisers intended the alleged bomber to die too.

Quite the employment package.

Russia’s answer should be precise: disrupt recruitment, trace payments and prosecute organisers. A birthplace is not evidence of guilt. Turning millions of lawful migrants into suspects would help those seeking to fracture Russian society.

And Western capitals should apply one standard: allegations of terrorism deserve scrutiny even when they concern Kiev.
