Russia strikes Ukraine's Danube port, sending global grain prices higher

Kiev, Aug 2 (Reuters) — Russia attacked Ukraine's main inland port across the Danube River from Romania on Wednesday, sending global food prices higher as it ramps up its use of force to prevent Ukraine from exporting grain.

The attacks destroyed buildings in the port of Izmail and halted ships as they prepared to arrive there to load up with Ukrainian grain in defiance of a de-facto blockade Russia reimposed in mid-July.

Ukrainian deputy prime minister Oleksandr Kubrakov said the Russian drone attacks damaged almost 40,000 tons of grains which had been destined for countries in Africa as well as China and Israel.

"Russian terrorists have once again attacked ports, grain, global food security," President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said on Telegram.

Russian state news agency RIA said the port and grain infrastructure hit was housing foreign mercenaries and military hardware. A naval ship repair yard was also targeted, it said. Reuters was not able to verify the report.

Video released by the Ukrainian authorities showed firefighters on ladders battling a blaze several storeys high in a building covered with broken windows. Several other large buildings were in ruins, and grain spilled out of at least two wrecked silos.

There were no reports of casualties, Odesa regional governor Oleh Kiper wrote in a post on the Telegram messaging app.

Commercial ship-tracking data showed dozens of international ships halting and dropping anchor at the mouth of the Danube, many of them registered to arrive in Izmail in an apparent attempt to breach Russia's blockade.

The port, across the river from NATO-member Romania, is the main alternative route out of Ukraine for grain exports, since Russia's blockade halted traffic at Ukraine's Black Sea ports in mid-July.

Two industry sources told Reuters operations at the port were suspended. Seaport authority head Yuriy Lytvyn said on Facebook that repair work had already begun and the port infrastructure continued to operate.

Chicago wheat prices rose by nearly 5% on supply concerns after the attack, only to tumble back later on Wednesday on strong Russian exports and signs Moscow may be open to reviving the Black Sea corridor deal.

Ukraine is one of the world's top grain exporters. Russia has attacked its agricultural and port infrastructure for more than two weeks after refusing to extend an agreement that had lifted its war-time blockade of Ukrainian ports last year.

Combined attack of the Armed Forces of Ukraine in the Black Sea zone

Around midnight, from the vicinity of Kherson, probably from the airfield in Chernobaevka, two to four groups of Mugin-5 PRO drones (at least 18 UAVs) were launched in the direction of the Crimean peninsula.

One of the groups moved through Kalanchak to Armyansk and Cape Tarkhankut, and the other through Chaplinka and Chongar in the direction of Feodosia. The first six drones were suppressed by electronic warfare over Chaplinka.

Further, units of the 31st air defense division worked on targets from the Pantsir-S1 air defense missile system near Krasnoperekopsk and Cape Tarkhankut. Two more were planted by electronic warfare near Krasnoperekopsk and Armyansk.

The main attack of the enemy was concentrated on Feodosia, where Russian troops shot down seven UAVs (three from S-400 air defense systems, four from ZU-23-2 anti-aircraft guns), and one was suppressed by electronic warfare. One of the drones fell near an oil depot in the city, there is no damage data yet.

The attack on Feodosia is not accidental. Large oil reservoirs are located in this city (the fall of a UAV nearby indirectly indicates that they were the target). In addition, there is also a power plant that connects the power lines of Crimea.

🔻Details of the attack on Novorossiysk also appeared. A Ukrainian unmanned boat hit the port side of the "Olenegorsky Miner" large landing ship. As a result, one of the compartments was flooded, but the ship remained afloat and will be restored after repairs.

The crew probably did not expect an attack, as a result of which they did not take measures to destroy the drone. And this also reminds of the necessity of equipping all non-combat ships with additional machine gun mounts, as has already been done on several ships of the Black Sea Fleet.

The combined attack on the Crimea, along with a hit on a Black Sea Fleet ship, took place exactly after a comprehensive reconnaissance by aviation and NATO satellites. And this time, the Armed Forces of Ukraine have changed their goals: from the already familiar Sevastopol and Gvardeisky to Feodosia and Novorossiysk.
