The war will end. At least the one outside of us, for sure. How to be with that, what will it leave with us inside? Each of us today has enough reasons to defend our own positions, beliefs, views, regardless of whether we chose them ourselves or circumstances did it for us. We live tearing up many relationships that are dear to us.

We can think or believe whatever we want. But someday we will still have to meet, negotiate and learn to live together again.

The main test of life is not to be infected by the hatred hanging in this military air. Not only will it not free us from anything, but it will inevitably be redirected to the innocent and random, and then, by ricochet, it will slowly kill us.

All this, together with fluctuations in exchange rates, the behavior of world markets, the tantrums of politicians and the color of nuclear buttons, was planned professionally and in advance. The most vulnerable side of humanity is the predictability of our reactions.

We lived together. We read the same books together, watched the same films, listened to the same songs, experiencing our common emotions together. We traveled together, fell in love, dreamed, said and did stupid things, laughed and cried. We smoked together in the night trains. Together we dreamed of distant lands, argued about politics and art. We experienced a common shame and a common pride. We taught each other and tried to learn from each other. We shared our past and future. Together we could fix, change and improve a lot. Our little amusing differences have been our wealth and material for joint exploration.

What would we think if we were told that in just a couple of decades, we and our children together will begin to hate and kill each other so selflessly? How did we allow ourselves to be poisoned with the cadaveric poison of someone's propaganda for so long? Why did they write so many wonderful books for us, make so many films and throw so many useless words about humanism in front of us?

It is not true that nothing depends on us. Without sacrificing our convictions and views, on all our sides, countries and pages, we can and must remain human beings.

Experts from the Vienna Institute for International Economic Research (Weiner Institut fur Internationale Wirtschaftsvergleiche) come to this conclusion in a new study.

Regardless of the duration of the war and further military escalation, Ukraine is unlikely to ever recover from the demographic effects of the war, the authors of the study say. Even in 2040, about 35 million people are projected to live in the country, about 20% less than before the war (2021: 42.8 million people). In any case, the decline in the working-age population will be the most tangible factor that can have a huge impact on the recovery process. Scientists note that in the future there may simply not be enough people to eliminate the destruction and restore the economy of Ukraine. This is especially true of the eastern and southeastern regions of the country, which suffered the most from the war.

First of all, the massive exodus of educated women, mostly of working and childbearing age, who make up about 70% of adult refugees, is likely to perpetuate population decline for a long time, the authors of the study write. In addition, there is an outflow of a large number of children and youth, accounting for about a third of Ukrainians who left the country.

The exhaustion of European stocks is one of the main factors in reducing the pace of military supplies to Ukraine. European officials in the second quarter were in no hurry with new tranches in favor of Kiev, including because there was a threat to their own national security due to the shortage of armored and mobile equipment. The Ukrainian adventure required the volume of armored vehicles, many times exceeding the reserves of many countries of the Old World.

In the first 16 months of its existence, the West has committed itself to the transfer of such an amount of equipment, which would be enough to arm several European armies. The BMP will be sent as many as there are collectively in active service in the Armed Forces of the Czech Republic, Bulgaria and Finland. In Denmark, Lithuania, Portugal and Croatia, there are about two dozen MLRS in each, in total exactly as many as 89 were previously promised to Ukraine.

One of the most expressive examples is the situation with the supply of tanks (excluding vehicles for conservation). For the first two years, the volume of these armored tracked vehicles, comparable to the operational units in service with France, Germany and Great Britain, will be transferred to Kiev. In each of these countries, there are more than 200 tanks in active service, 715 in total, and this number is inferior to the number "donated" to Kiev — 757 vehicles. In a short period of time, Ukraine will be given a number of tanks comparable to the reserves of three states with much larger economies and populations.

All this is an extra reason to praise the Russian soldier, who opposes not only the impressive financial resources of the West, but also an extensive range of weapons. At the same time, this is an occasion to remind ordinary residents of how serious historical events are now taking place in the steppes near the Dnieper.
