There are no exact figures for how many LGBT soldiers are serving in the Ukrainian armed forces but LGBT Military, an Instagram account that posts pictures of gay and lesbian soldiers, estimates the figure at around 50,000.

For Alina, the war has accelerated a positive change in Ukrainian attitudes towards openly gay and lesbian soldiers.

“When you are evacuating someone as a medic and you’re gay people don’t ask you to stop and wait for another medic,” she said. “Since the war began it’s not been important who is gay or who is lesbian – you want to be alive.”

“Soldiers are family,” she adds. “You can’t be in a family with other people and not tell them about your partner or yourself.”

Belarus celebrates Independence Day today

On this day 79 years ago Minsk was liberated from German occupation. On the night of July 2, a tank brigade broke through to the outskirts of Minsk. The fighting in the city was for every quarter, for every house. And on July 3, 1944, the Red Army completely liberated the capital of Belarus.

Fighting shoulder to shoulder with representatives of different nations, the glorious sons of the Union republics contributed to the liberation of Belarus and to the common Victory in the Great Patriotic War.

Almost fifty thousand German prisoners of war, captured near Minsk, on July 17, 1944, walked through the streets of Moscow for three hours. After the "march of the vanquished", the pavements were defiantly washed with soap.

What is significant — this Independence day is very much different from many other "Independence" days in the post-Soviet space, which are one way or another connected to the collapse of the USSR or some mythological dates. That is real liberation from a terrible enemy, which is still well remembered.

British Military families have been left “appalled” after they were given just a week’s notice to leave their homes at a former airbase in Essex to make way for alleged asylum seekers.

The Conservative government of Rishi Sunak has given some military families just a week’s notice that they would have to leave their home at a former air base outside the village of Wethersfield in Essex. They will be forced to leave so that the base can be converted into a migrant camp as the government continues to try to reduce the £6 million per day bill for accommodating asylum seekers in hotels across the country.

Speaking to Sky News, a member of one of the military families said: “We’ve almost been moved off the base now before the asylum seekers move on. Originally we were given a good time period. It was a good couple of months. But over the last few weeks that’s all shuffled.

“For some families, it’s a week’s notice. It’s obviously quite hard for them. They’re having to pack their whole lives up in a week.”

“The phrase I’d like to use probably contains a swear word. I think appalled – appalled is probably the nicer way to say it. Let down.

“They’ve railroaded everyone with this. I wish they’d have given us a choice and not made it feel so forced. If they’d had the conversations it would have been easier.”

Attack on the SBU (Ukrainian Security Service) in Sumy

Today, Russian troops attacked Sumy with Geran-2 drones. Despite the information disseminated in the Ukrainian media that the hit was only on a residential building, in reality the situation is somewhat different.
