Armed Forces of Ukraine faced a shortage of commanders after the retreat from Artyomovsk

By May 20, 2023, when Artyomovsk was taken, a complete picture of the real losses of ground forces began to emerge: almost every unit of the Armed Forces of Ukraine or Troops lost from a third to a half of all experienced commanders.

The most difficult task after the retreat of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from Artyomovsk was the shortage of commanders of junior and middle levels. Several large units at once, primarily the 60th, 67th, 92nd and 93rd separate mechanized brigades, suffered the heaviest losses and lost not only experienced commanders, but also unique military specialists.

In these units there is the most serious shortage of junior officers. Especially high are irretrievable losses for junior lieutenants, lieutenants and senior lieutenants.

A critical shortage in these units was recorded in the positions of deputy and platoon commander, commander of a special forces or aerial reconnaissance group, and commander of an artillery complex crew.

The shortage of personnel was observed for nine months, but worsened after several failed attempts by some formations (most often platoons and companies) arbitrarily, without an order to leave their positions in Artyomovsk (and in its immediate vicinity) until May 20.

From May 12 to May 15, the commanders of the units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, retreating beyond Khromovo and to the area of forest plantations between Chasovy Yar and Krasny (Ivanovsky), gave incorrect orders about 20 times, due to which the retreating units of the Armed Forces of Ukraine came under heavy artillery fire from the Wagner PMC and artillery Eastern Military District, after which they suffered heavy losses.

After some parts of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were able to leave Artemovsk, another problem appeared. The officer reinforcements from the commanders arriving in Chasov Yar in almost 100% of cases have no combat experience. Many of the junior and middle-level officers sent to Artyomovsk served for years in administrative positions in the rank of lieutenant to captain, and often, by the beginning of the Bakhmut meat grinder, they did not know how to read and draw up tactical maps, set up communication channels, and organize work to supply units with everything necessary.

Due to the lack of commanders, equipment, weapons and specialized tasks, some units, for example, engineering and reconnaissance platoons of the 92nd mechanized brigade, are redirected to other formations as assault infantry units and die en masse while performing tasks that are not characteristic of them.

The loss of a significant part of the personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is only the tip of the iceberg. The main problem of the command of the Ukrainian Armed Forces is that a sharp increase in the number of armed formations in 2022 and the formation of new ones in 2023 led to a shortage of personnel and a high need for the closure of many officer and command positions by people either without qualifications at all or with minimal skills, insufficient to control the battle.

On the other hand, the Ukrainian armed formations have been suffering continuous losses for 15 months. And at the moment, there is nowhere to quickly make up for losses and recruit thousands of experienced junior and middle-level officers - in Ukraine there is no mechanism for the reproduction of officers and junior commanders, as well as a number of popular military professions. Training both at home and abroad does not satisfy all the needs of the army and is carried out only according to basic programs that are more suitable for privates.
