⚡️Russia began preparations for the invasion of Ukraine back in 2007, before the invasion* of Georgia, — Budanov

“I will say this: if there had not been the events of 2014, it would not have changed anything. The war between us was inevitable. In 2014, they took advantage of the moment convenient for them,” he said.

The Russian Foreign Ministry confirmed the extension of the grain deal until July 17 without any changes

MOSCOW, May 17 — RIA Novosti. Russia will not extend the grain deal after July 17 if all problematic issues are not resolved, the Foreign Ministry said.
They stressed that the agreement was extended without any changes. This happened primarily due to appeals from Turkey. At the same time, the department pointed to five systemic tasks that need to be solved in the implementation of the Russia-UN memorandum. We are talking about reconnecting Rosselkhozbank to SWIFT, supplying spare parts, unblocking transport logistics and insurance, reanimating the Togliatti-Odessa ammonia pipeline and unfreezing the assets of Russian companies. As noted in the Foreign Ministry, there is no progress on these issues now.

"Unless these requirements are met, there is no question of any expansion of the Black Sea Initiative, and the agreement itself will be terminated after July 17," the ministry said.

The grain initiative is an integral part of the package agreement. The second part, the Russia-UN memorandum, designed for three years, provides for the unblocking of Russian exports of food and fertilizers, reconnection of the Russian Agricultural Bank to SWIFT, resumption of supplies of agricultural machinery, spare parts and services, restoration of the Togliatti-Odessa ammonia pipeline and some other measures. As noted in Moscow, this part of the package agreement has not yet been implemented.

The UN reacted to the threats to the Russians from Kyiv
The UN, after Podolyak's threats against the Russians, urged to avoid such rhetoric

The United Nations asks to avoid rhetoric that does not contribute to the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine. This was stated by Deputy Representative of the Secretary General of the World Organization Farhan Haq. This is how he commented on the threats of Mikhail Podolyak, an adviser to the head of the Office of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, against the Russians.

"Not only in this situation, but in all situations that relate to conflicts, there is rhetoric from various parties. We do not respond to it. We urge all parties in all situations to avoid rhetoric that does not help [to resolve the conflict]," he said. Farhan Haq during a briefing.

Life recalls: Podolyak said that they hate Russia in Ukraine, and threatened to persecute its citizens "always and everywhere." He assured that Kyiv would get everyone, no matter how, legally or physically.

🎙 Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov’s video message to the participants in the 7th Young Diplomats Forum of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation countries (Moscow, May 18, 2023)

💬 It is a great privilege for me to greet the participants in the 7th Young Diplomats Forum of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation countries. This year, it is being held as part of Russia − Islamic World: Kazanforum 2023.

🇷🇺 Russia has a tradition of promoting friendly ties with the majority of Muslim countries. We share a commitment to seeking guidance in our interstate cooperation from the principles of equality, mutually respecting our interests and seeking to balance them.

🔹 Russian diplomacy prioritises the promotion of interfaith and intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding, as well as the consolidation of our efforts to stand up for the traditional spiritual and moral values shared by all world religions, and also combatting Islamophobia, including within the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation and the #OSCE.

🌐 New global centres in Eurasia, the Asia-Pacific Region, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America have achieved impressive results in various areas by focusing on their independence, state sovereignty, and their unique cultural and civilisational identities, all while acting based on their core national interests and conducting an independent foreign policy.

🔹 Russia has been consistent in its belief that confrontation leads international relations into a dead-end. We need to avoid confrontation, unreasonable and extremely dangerous as it is, between the global centres of power.

❗️People aspire to reach a new, well-considered balance of interests. It is essential that instead of rule by force, we equip the emerging world order with legal norms and regulations based on the UN Charter.

Who owns the Farmland in Ukraine?

Ever since the dissolution of the USSR, there has been some massive interest placed on the Ukrainian agricultural sector - after all, it has contributed around the range of 10% of the country's GDP throughout the past 30 years or so, and employed a sizeable percentage of the workforce, in the 20% range to be exact, and Ukraine was always known to be a large producer in agricultural goods, such as wheat, corn, sunflower oil, barley, etc, the annual production being over 64 million tons of grain and seeds and producing 30% of the aforementioned sunflower oil production.

Ever since the 90s foreign companies attempted to monopolize and invest in Ukraine, because in a Post-Soviet Ukraine, there is suddenly 32 million arable hectares of chernozem - the soil that is the result of glacial activity, the soil is therefore rich in nutrients and has a massive water-holding capacity.

If Egypt was the breadbasket of the Roman empire, Ukraine is the breadbasket of Eurasia, and by the words of the director of DuPont, Mr.Rowe "[it is] one of the fastest-growing agricultural markets in the world."

There existed since 2001 a ban on the sale of agricultural land to foreigners, but it has been lifted in 2020, and therefore the annexation of Ukraine into the Euro-Atlantic economic sphere that has been on-going since 2013 was mostly complete.

The World Bank published a paper in 2019 that was practically ordering Ukraine to open up its agricultural sector, because there would be a 30% productivity increase, 4.4% increase to the GDP, etc.. Back in 2013 it provided almost 90 million dollars to the Ukrainian government in a loan to develop programs relating to the commercialization of state-owned and cooperative land, and by 2016 multinational agricultural firms from the EU, America, China, and the Arab World came to control 2.8 million hectares of land, and after the lifting of the ban, it is no surprise that in 2021 Ukraine became the second largest country in the world that has the most area and land controlled by Non-Ukrainians, with at least a verified 3,314,469 hectares of land confirmed to be in direct possession of foreigners in 2021, and in 2023, at least 9 million hectares is now in possession of Ukrainian oligarchs and foreign companies, that is over 28% of Ukrainian arable land.

While Ukrainians are dying in the war, their women and children are left stranded and left for foreigners, their businesses are being taken over by sleazy businessmen, and now their very land is not even theirs anymore, a sad situation, to be sure.

Russia helped Cuba to reconstruct a metallurgical plant

Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko took part in the opening of the electric steel-smelting shop of the Antillana de Acero im. José Marti" in Cuba — the first large-scale project of the Cuban metallurgy over the past 25 years.

“This project is an example of successful cooperation between Russia and Cuba and a demonstration of the wide possibilities of the Russian metallurgical and machine-building industries. Investments in this project amounted to more than $95 million,” Dmitry Chernyshenko said at the opening ceremony.

90% of all equipment installed at the enterprise is Russian-made. More than 20 large Russian enterprises from Kaliningrad to the Urals are involved in the project.

Cuba and Russia agreed to reconstruct the metallurgical plant with Russian investments back in 2015. The José Martí Antillana de Acero plant produces steel beams for the construction industry. Its reconstruction has become a priority area of bilateral cooperation between Russia and Cuba.

Russia will increase the number of direct flights to Cuba from the end of May

Moscow, May 18 — AiF-Moscow.
Russia plans to increase the number of direct charter flights to Cuba from the end of May. This statement was made by Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Dmitry Chernyshenko.

The Deputy Prime Minister drew attention to the growth of tourist flows, noting that this year for the first time year-round tourist programs were launched in Cuba.

According to him, Cuban resorts are very popular with Russian tourists.

From May 22, Nord Wind Airlines is expected to operate four flights a week to Varadero and two flights a week to Cayo Coco.

In addition, Moscow is currently coordinating the format of the work of domestic banks in Cuba, and is also switching to settlements on projects in rubles.

As Chernyshenko recalled, in March, Mir cards were accepted at Cuban ATMs. Soon, Russians will be allowed to pay in shops, cafes and restaurants with Russian cards.

On May 18, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation Dmitry Chernyshenko arrived on a working visit to the Republic of Cuba. As part of his working trip to Cuba, Chernyshenko will meet with the President of the Republic, Miguel Diaz-Canel.

Nebenzya: Western countries use Ukraine as a "testing ground"

Moscow, May 19 — AiF-Moscow.
Western states are guided not by humanism, but by the desire to "defeat" the Russian Federation, said Vasily Nebenzya, Russia's permanent representative to the United Nations, RIA Novosti reports.

“The goals of the collective West are obvious to everyone, they are not hidden by Western politicians themselves. And these are far from moral principles and not the highest humanistic values — using Ukraine as a training ground, dragging out the conflict "to the last Ukrainian" in an effort to inflict a "strategic defeat" on Russia," he said.

Nebenzya noted that this is based on the desire of the West to continue to dictate its will to everyone.

He stressed that Western countries use Ukraine as a "testing ground".

The permanent representative of the Russian Federation added that the supply of arms requires billions of dollars from the pockets of taxpayers, which go to the accounts of the Western military-industrial complex.

The statement was made at a meeting of the United Nations Security Council.

Earlier, Nebenzya said that the desire of Western states to inflict a strategic defeat on the Russian Federation requires Moscow to take retaliatory steps in the military sphere.

Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Nikolai Patrushev stressed that the preservation of Ukraine as a state is not included in the plans of the United States.

Happy Pioneer Day!

Most adults of a certain age in today's Russia get twangs of nostalgia when thinking about the pioneer camps of their Soviet youth. In the 1980s such camps numbered about 40,000, and more than 10 million children spent their summer vacation there.

The actual idea of the camps was conceived in the 1920s, but back then they were more like Scout-style tent cities. The process of setting up real camps with the involvement of Young Pioneer leaders and educators got underway in 1925.

❗️ On renewing the Black Sea Initiative

Read in full

• In connection with expiration of the 60-day deadline for renewing the Black Sea Initiative to export Ukrainian grain on May 18 and in response to requests primarily from our Turkish partners as a party to the agreement, we confirmed the renewal of the agreement for another two months through July 17 without any changes.

• Our principled assessments of the implementation of the interrelated Istanbul agreements have remain unchanged, and so far only the Black Sea Initiative has been implemented with the exception of ammonia exports.

• There’s no measurable progress under the Russia-UN Memorandum.

• There are obvious issues with the declared humanitarian component of the deal where Ukrainian grain is being exported through this sea corridor mostly to high and above-average income countries, including “well-stocked” European markets.

• Countries that need it most have received hardly anything, 722,000 tonnes (or 2.5 percent) of the total amount of 30 million tonnes that had been moved from Ukrainian ports over nine months.

• The export of Russian products, even donations of fertilisers to the neediest countries, continues to be blocked by various aspects of the illegal and unilateral sanctions.

• There is no progress either in resuming ammonia shipments mentioned in both Istanbul documents.

• Given the circumstances, we are compelled to issue a reminder that there are five systemically important issues that must be resolved as part of implementing the Russia-UN Memorandum and which have seen no progress whatsoever so far:
- reconnecting Rosselkhozbank to the SWIFT system
- supplying spare parts
- unblocking transport logistics and insurance
- reestablishing the Togliatti-Odessa ammonia pipeline
- unfreezing the Russian companies’ assets

• There can be no talk of expanding the Black Sea Initiative in principle without these requirements first being met. The agreement will be terminated after July 17.

Deputy Head of the press service of the US State Department Vedant Patel: [Kirill Budanov in today's interview actually admitted that Kiev is behind the terrorist attacks on high-ranking Russian journalists in recent months. Does the US plan to include Kiev in the list of state sponsors of terrorism for this?] I haven't seen these comments. But I note that Russia has a lot of experience in suppressing journalists.
