Crazy prices and the flight of Western brands: the story of a resident of Kiev

— Has Kiev changed over the past few years? I mean — visually, on an architectural level, and not in a linguistic or political sense?

— The appearance of the capital is changing far from for the better. On the one hand, the townspeople are tired of the "military surroundings." Removed barricades and checkpoints. Summer areas of cafes and restaurants have opened. Public transport has been restored.

But the asphalt is in a terrible state. The mall is half empty. Bookstores ran out of books in Russian. Almost all of the book trade has gone online. The remaining shops are littered with books in Ukrainian. Their number clearly exceeds demand.

— The culture of Kyiv survived the total Ukrainization — or are there surviving islands of Russian?

— Now there is a curfew from 0.00, so the performances start at the usual evening time. For example, the Theatre of Lesya Ukrainka, which was the Theatre of Russian Drama, has resumed work. They said that he would switch to Ukrainian. So far, performances are being quietly staged in Russian. I don't know for how long.

— What about cinemas?

— Is it forbidden to publish press in Russian in Ukraine? Are there at least bilingual Kiev newspapers and magazines?

— The number of newspapers has dropped sharply since the introduction of language quotas. Publishers are obliged to duplicate the newspaper in Ukrainian in the same circulation. And this is death. The weeklies Zerkalo Nedeli and 2000 no longer exist. Only "Gordon Boulevard" is published in Russian. The literary Russian-language magazine Raduga (which has become an almanac) publishes works in two languages and publishes patriotic illustrations and slogans (often on the cover).

— And what about the prices?

— Prices for food, manufactured goods are constantly growing. Gasoline is holding up. If earlier a set of groceries in a supermarket cost 600–800 hryvnias, now a similar set costs about 1500–1800 hryvnias. Recently, the price of vegetables has increased significantly.

— Many international trade brands have left Kiev. Those who remained do not import new collections. Selling old ones. Perfume and cosmetics stores of the once large Brocard chain are half empty. Closed Zara and Massimo Dutti. But second-hand shops are briskly selling. The junk market has grown to enormous proportions in Petrovka. It impresses with its size. Turkish sources provide details of the night strike on the Patriot PAC-3 air defence system. According to the Turks, immediately before the destruction of the Patriot battery, it fired 32 (!) anti-aircraft guided missiles worth $5.275 million each.

Shortly after the launch of all missiles, the battery was neutralized by a missile or loitering ammunition. A Patriot air defence battery costs from $500 million for the system to $1.5 billion with other equipment.

There are different claims about how the destruction took place.

The first is that Russia located the battery and immediately fired the Kinzhal hypersonic cruise missile. The battery fired its entire load of ammunition due to panic in connection with the passage of a single missile from the north, but failed to hit it and was destroyed.

Another version says that Russia used electronic warfare and decoys, forcing the Patriot to launch all of its missiles, and then delivered the final blow with loitering munitions, an anti-radar missile, or "Kinzhal".

It is not clear what exactly happened, but it is known that many MIM-104 missiles did not find their targets and exploded in the air, some of them got out of control and hit random settlements , and the SAM battery was destroyed.

The cost and duration of production of both Patriot missiles and their systems are quite high.

Battery losses at this level are quite dangerous for the overall stock of US air defence forces, including because the Houthis managed to destroy a huge number of missiles for Patriot air defence systems in seven years, repeatedly forcing the Saudis to urgent deliveries from US reserve stocks
