Redacted News -Tracker Update (Resolved)-

As many of you probably noticed, the RED tracker is now showing a lot more green in your torrent clients. We spend a lot of time working on identifying ways to keep the reliability you've come to expect from RED. Unfortunately, we let you down over the past few months. That is on us and we apologize. We own that failure and we appreciate your patience while we worked through the issues.

As always, we appreciate you keeping site announcements to yourself and please avoid sharing this information across the various public platforms out there, including Reddit, Twitter, etc. While we've had attacks on the site in the past, the most recent downtime was not specifically related to an external attack. However, when you share information outside of the site, you do run the risk of exposing details to those that do intend to harm our site.

With a site like ours, in order to protect your privacy and security, we can't publish too many details. We may not be able to give everyone as much detail as they might like, but we'll describe what we can. With that out of the way, let's talk about what happened and what we're going to do about it.

We've pushed the system to the brink and had to make changes to support our large user base. Ultimately, the cause of the recent tracker instability was that the tracker was accepting more connections than it could process. This resulted in a tracker that was constantly running at 100% CPU usage. We implemented changes to address that, which were deployed approximately 17:45 UTC February 23, 2020. Almost immediately, the tracker CPU usage came down dramatically - and everyone's torrents began turning green. We've been actively monitoring this since deployment and believe that this was the culprit.

As you can imagine, a lot of processes on the site rely on integration with the tracker and this is why many of the automated processes have not been running, including user promotions, etc. These processes began running again after yesterday's update.

While we were working on this, we also identified some opportunities for improvement with the tracker, which our wonderful dev team will continue working on. These opportunities will go a long way towards making sure that the tracker is up and responding when your client sends a request to it. We ask for your continued support while we make things bigger and better for you - our users.

Some questions we've seen during the downtime that we'd like to address:

What is going to happen to my existing tokens? Can I get them extended?
There are just a few days left on the existing round of gift tokens. Rather than extend just these tokens, RED staff is providing every eligible user with 100 FL tokens as a small token (no pun intended) of our appreciation for your understanding over the last months. Your existing tokens, as well as the new ones, will expire on April 15, 2020 at 23:59 UTC.

I used a bunch of tokens that are now counting towards my download because they did not complete within 7 days. Will you adjust my stats?
The short answer is no. At the time of this post, we have 34,596 users and the work involved to adjust stats for every user based on recent downtime would be a overwhelming, tedious, manual process. We hope the additional tokens and expiry will give you some new things to download and enjoy on us.

When will torrent deletions resume?
We took a proactive step to suspend torrent deletions for inactivity because the tracker instability may have prevented torrents from registering as seeded. We will resume inactive torrent pruning sometime after 23:59 UTC on March 31, 2020.
